In my opinion, you can't go wrong with both. However, if this is your only car, I recommend getting an E55. If this is going to be your second car, then both cars are fine. Unfortunately, I don't like the looks of the 997; that is subjective.

This is a funny and informative review of the E55.
http://www.edmunds.com/new/2005/merc...Mercedes-Benz*
It's a GREAT, GREAT car. It will dust almost anything on the road. Like the 997 it also has an adjustable suspension. Yet it can still be a kid/stuff/friends/spouse/chicks hauler if needed (but not all at once, haha).
The staggering power of the E55 comes with one concern for me - reliability and maintenance costs.
The 997 is NEW. It may have a couple of íssues since it's so new. But it is also a GREAT, GREAT car. Is it fast enough? Hell yeah, especially the S. You can easily get a ticket on EVERY ROAD YOU DRIVE ON. It won't have quite the visceral punch of the E55, but then a lot of the E55's punch can be lost in just roasting tires. I'm sure the E55's passing and accelerating on the move capability is breathtaking though, so you'd be able to shoot from 60-100 in no time.
If you need 4 seats, obviously the E55 is the answer. If you don't, then for me the 997 is the way to go. Why? It's not going to be confused for anything else, and the handling is second to none and it's just so sweet and evolved. Even if you don't go mountain or track thrashing, the handling to me is as big or bigger a grin factor than pure speed. There's no tickets specifically for taking a corner without braking or slowing down, hehe and it's a LOAD OF FUN.

I was reading 1Sick's BMW Bimmer post, noticed the M5 article.
http://www.bimmer-mag.com/art1/art1p3.html
It seems the BMW guys like to think the new M5 competes w/Ferrari and Porsche, not the E55.
Lamborghini didn't make the list![Big Thumb Up](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/biggthumpup.gif)
The BMW also has a better tranny, and brakes compared to everyone else.
Yup this 4000lb front engine sedan competes with Porsche and Ferrari.

Take this from who is not a car nut by any means, I like cars but they don't rock my world, so here it goes, if I were you I'd get a 911, E55 does look like a average E320 , then again if you are a car enthusiastic YES you can see the difference,
