Get the FX, any FX! There are more aftermarket options available for the FX35 over the FX45, and the 3.5L engine is no slouch, 280hp is nothing to laugh at. Intake + exhaust = ~$750-1000 and gets you ~15-20hp. Lowering springs + strut bar = $500 and handling like a 350Z.
The Volvo looks like a nice option... but don't know about reliability... father had a 760GLE a while back which had huge issues, I had a Saab which had huge issues... Swedish cars are permanently crossed off my options list...
X5 is a nice car, ok performance, aging design, BMW = Bring My Wallet!
RX, GX, LX - it's a Lexus, 'nuff said!

You don't really feel like your driving a big truck. And they have a power rear liftgate which is pretty cool. You can drive one home for 50-55K. Plus you don't see them everywhere you go like an Escalade. Every time I turn around there's another one.

BTW, interesting avatar Savvy. Shouldn't she have black eyes by now?

I'll probably be test driving SUVs for a week at this rate. Models I'm still looking at are in this order:
GX470 - although a little narrow is still a top choice.
4Runner - same as the GX but not as plush
FX35 - Maybe not be as practical but the fun factor keeps it in the running
RX330 - solid choice but may be under powered compared to the other SUVs I'm looking at.
And based on JD Power initial quality survey for the 2005 model, maybe the XC90 V8. I'm not holding my breath though.

Sometimes ago I've got injured, you don't want to know how
and I was taken to ER by one of those FX35, that was my very first ride in FX, the only thing I can tell you is that, every time it hit a puddle or something, it was loud enough to get my attention even in that situation.
