BMW are big fans of "two of everything." 
Just look at the previous V12-powered cars: They were actually 2 inline 6 motors with all the required individual trimming: 2 water pumps, etc., etc.

I probably knew it, at a time I was A BMW tech but when working on BMW's I was fast paced and never really stopped to look and say wow, brake jobs and 60k maintenance intervals where more important plus I left right before the M5 came in so I never really had any time to sit in it and test it out, nor did I really care.
