In 1990 Ital Design produced a show car that he tried to sell to Jaguar but they weren't interested. Toyota picked up the design and produced the GS. You can clearly see the carry over through the 3 gens. I wonder if Ital Design had any involvement in the Gen 3?

Design Freshened for '96
The GS 300 provides a unique combination of distinctive Italian styling, responsive handling performance and luxury features and amenities. The GS shape was originally developed by master designer Giorgetto Giugiaro's ItalDesign Group as the Kensington, a concept vehicle which debuted to acclaim at the Geneva Auto Show. With further development by Lexus designers in Japan, the distinctive shape was introduced as a production vehicle to the U.S. in 1993.
Exterior appearance refinements have freshened the GS for 1996. The rear combination lamps, rear panel and badging have been updated for a cleaner look. Lexus factory chrome plated wheels are available as an option, and feature exceptionally deep layers of plating to meet stringent Lexus standards for corrosion and chip resistance. Five new exterior color round out 1996 visual enhancements.

Thanks for the additional pics. I fell in love with the style when I first saw it in '90 and was the reason I bought my Gen 1. I stopped by our Portland Lexus dealer tonight and they had a Matador/Grey GS300 in the lot as a demo car. My sale rep wasn't around so I'll need to schedule time with her for a drive.

nice find! i always wanted to see the pre-1st gen. the profile is similar but it looks kinda like an older Volvo station wagons from the front.
i'm still trying to get used to the 3rd gen's front but like all the previous GS's, its got a nice rear

Those early concept pics are great...I had no idea the design was originally pitched to Jag. Just think where Jag might have been today if they had accepted. Of course, they wouldn't have had Lexus reliability, so I guess Jag would be about where it is today anyway.
