Default New Name in Porsche's Model Range

http://www3.us.porsche.com/english/u...05-02-23-1.htm

Cayman coming between the Carrera and the Boxster

Stuttgart. In the course of this year Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, will be enlarging its range of sports cars through the introduction of another outstanding model. Based on the Boxster series, the new car, given its superior product qualities, will rank between the 911 Carrera and the Boxster S. This position of the new model is also borne out by its six-cylinder boxer engine transmitting maximum output of 295 bhp (217 kW) to the rear wheels. Like the power of the engine, the price of this new sports car will also come between that of the 911 Carrera and the Boxster S.

Apart from inner strengths and qualities typical of Porsche, this sporting two-seater will also show outstanding style and superiority in its looks and appearance. The exceptional design of the car is accentuated by muscular design features conveying a strong feeling of both power and agile driving behaviour. In addition, the new sports car not only fulfils the great demands made by the Porsche customer in terms of sporting performance, but also, through its well-conceived space concept, allows all kinds of leisure time activities.

Reflecting its superior and, indeed, unique product substance, this new Porsche sports car will bear its own name: It will be called the Cayman S, thus ranking equal with the Carrera, Boxster, and Cayenne model designations already so rich in tradition.

Introducing this name, Porsche is taking up a concept from the animal world: The cayman belongs to the crocodile family. Within this group of the world's largest reptiles, the cayman is however a relatively small but very nimble athlete. And precisely this creates a clear resemblance not only to Porsche's new sports car, but also to the Company as a whole: The cayman is acknowledged as a highly specialised hunter with strength and agility, quick reflexes and clear target orientation. The heart of the Cayman S is its 3.4-litre power unit mounted midship in front of the rear axle. Benefiting from this mid-engine concept and an excellent power-to-weight ratio, the Cayman S is perfectly suited for the kind of performance so typical of Porsche: The Cayman S responds directly to the steering and ensures very dynamic behaviour in bends. It goes without saying that Porsche, maintaining the usual standard, offers supreme brake technology for very high deceleration forces also in this new, fixed roof model. In a nutshell, therefore, the combination of supreme power and performance in the Cayman S provides an unprecedented experience on the road: driving pleasure in its purest form.

So basically this is a hardtop Boxter, with I think the old 911 enigne?? Did they ever think about a front engined Porsche again, or is that a bad idea?? And slot inbetween, that would make it about 55-60K. I dont know what to think about this.

I definately like the idea of a hard top Boxter type car. It sound like it will have decent power, mid engine is always good, and a hard top which I prefer. It sounds like a Porsche I could own. Although I;m not sure about the name Cayman S.

Yeah, its the Boxster coupe. Good marketing move with the new name.

I have heard a sub 40k Porsche is coming.

Here's a 'chop of what it *may* look like..
Whoa, that chop looks great. Yeah, a RS version or "clubsport" is rumored, more power and lighter weight. We'll finally see if a Boxster coupe willhurt 911 sales or can both co-exist.

Dang it what is it about that name Porsche that just seems so exciting?

I'm definately liking it now that I see pictures. I guessing this car will be eating up 911s at the track soon after the aftermarket gets ahold of it.

the rear quarter reminds me of a ferrari...

Looks fun as hell tho. I just hope it handles a lot better than the boxster. The boxster handles worse than my old BMW.

That car is going to rock.
Better weight distribution then the 911.

Should'nt a boxster hardtop be less exspensive then the convertible? Why if Porsche is concerned that a boxster looks too similiar to a 911 and they don't want to give the boxster S more power out of fear of taking 911 sales do they give the hardtop more power then a boxster S and price it closer to a base 911. Porsche should at least make a hardtop with the same power as the base boxster conv. and have it a few grand less expensive to steal more sales from the Z car, Z3, SLK, S2000 etc. Porsches used to be cars that many enthusiasts could eventually afford but now with their high prices only rich or very wealthy people can afford them and they are seen more as status symbols or doctor's toys. I have always seen boxsters as a six tenths 911 but the new one does have a much better interior and look. I know alot of people who haven't payed attention to prices of 911's and when they checked the recent prices were shocked and turned off at how much they cost. Porsche should do a 944, 968 replacement to get younger buyers in the door or a V-8 GT coupe. I just wish there prices weren't so ridicously high for 911's and Boxster S.
