Default XM Radio Increases prices by 30%

XM Satellite Radio to raise monthly fee by 30 pct
Mon Feb 28, 2005 10:38 AM ET
NEW YORK, Feb 28 (Reuters) - XM Satellite Radio (XMSR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday said it would raise the monthly fee for its nationwide radio services by about $3, or 30 percent, and would fold some premium features into its basic plan.
At $12.95 per month for the basic plan, XM's new monthly fee matches that of its rival, Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI.O: Quote, Profile, Research) . The new pricing plan starts on April 2.

I prefer Sirius in case anyone cares

Of COURSE we care. That is what this CAR CHAT forum is for....to discuss vehicles and their equipment....including sound systems.

No jokes either...I'm being Sirius..

I'd listen to XM if it did 80's Heavy Metal. What a way to drive.....Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, etc........

Stern will bring millions of listeners, but more than that he's also going to have advertisers. Here in New York, he gets over 10k per 30 second advertising spot w/his mention. Otherwise it's 3k (My numbers are about 5 years old). That's just the NY area. Imagine the rates (has to be siginificantly more) for a national program and then factor in 10-15 minutes per hour.

Sirius will gain revenues from quite a bit of advertising as well as millions of listeners. They only need 3 million listeners to break even and Stern has 10 million in only a portion of the top markets.

Think of Satellite Radio taking over FM radio the same way cable did so to the three networks ABC, NBC, and CBS. At first no one could imagine paying for television and then we all saw the types of programming and we couldn't resist.

When you find your favorite Sirius stations, you'll never go back. On XM I noticed a very short play list they would rotate on Squizz (the Alt Rock station). Sirius seems to have a bigger library they will play. I can't stop and think that's because Clear Channel owns so much stock in XM and they also a music promoter. You're gonna play what you need to promote.
