Hundreds of New Cars Crash on first day:
Ouch!
From the Motortrend website....

THOUSANDS of new registration cars rolled out of dealerships yesterday, but by the end of the day, 600 were smashed up - with Porsches topping the crash list - according to research.
A report by Churchill Car Insurance said 600 new cars crash on the first day and 3,240 within a week.
Luxury sports cars are most likely to be involved in a collision with Porsche drivers the most unlucky.
This is because the speedy German sports car, with its rear engine, can be hard to control for inexperienced drivers.
Churchill reckons pounds 8.1m of cars are damaged on day one, rising to pounds 43.7m by the end of the first week.
The study also followed new cars' first two years of motoring and showed that, after just a month, 13,400 had already been in the body shop for repairs.
After a year, 135,000 of these cars had been in an accident, rising to more than a quarter of a million after two years

It would be interesting if the study reported the amount of damage dollar wise these cars experienced. When my first new car (Back in 1990) was only 4 months old, someone put a dent in my rear 1/4 panel (Hit and run in a parking lot). It cost about $1200, but no doubt my car is still a statistic. When I worked at a dealer back in the early 90s, I say many newer cars come back in with a few scratches on the bumper. The dealer sends it to the body shop for a repaint and that too becomes a statistic. My 04 RX330 has a very light door ding on my rear fender lip. I guess I could have sent it in to a body shop to get fixed and I would again be a statistic, but I decided not to and live with it. What I'm saying is I wonder how much of those cars ended up in the body shop are from somewhat major crashes or if the majority are from minor dings and dents?
