Toyota Australia Unveils a Muscle-Bound Camry
Date Posted 03-07-2005

MELBOURNE, Australia — Conservative Camry lovers may be outraged, but Toyota Australia has souped up their favorite ride.

Toyota Australia has introduced a supercharged Camry model at the Melbourne International Motor Show. The prototype, code-named TS-01, looks mean with its new front end. Under the hood lurks a 248-horsepower, 3.0-liter supercharged V6. This gives the TS-01 a 0-to-60 time of under 7.2 seconds.

The five-speed manual transmission, which features a short-throw shift lever, receives input from a heavy-duty sport clutch adapted from Toyota Team Racing's rally Corollas.

TS-01 uses 18-inch Michelin Pilot Sports tires mounted on specially cast 14-spoke wheels. The suspension has been stiffened and tuned to approximate a race setup while still providing road comfort and compliance.

Even the body has received a sport-sculpted makeover.

What this means to you: The Aussies, instrumental in the resurrection of the GTO, are flexing their muscle again.

"That is one hot Camry" is a phrase I didn't think I would ever utter but that is one hot Camry.

Wow, it doesn't look like your average Camry that you see around. Looking sporty. But what's up with the two tone side mirrors?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the US Toyota Camry 3.3 SE with 225 horses do a 0-60 in 7.0 seconds? If that supercharged Camry does just less than 7.2, then...

According to Toyota's Australian website, there's no 3.3 available. My other guess is that the supercharger is running fairly low boost because we all know that high hp+ fwd does not often make too good of a serious driver's car; especially when based off of a Camry.

I don't really like the wheels but the 5 speed and enhanced performance are great. If I had a choice however, I would get a TRD supercharged Solara.

I like the current Camry with the TRD kit and BBS 18s they sell. Sharp looking car for a family sedan. This Aussie Camry is pretty hot! GREAT find!!

That looks damn good! It appears they put the "old" 1MZFE motor in so they could boost it with a TRD SC and keep teh factory warranty. They must be running it on regular gas. I'm pretty sure you can squeeze a few more horses out of that combination

The current Gen 5 is the best looking Camry to date. Especially with the body kit and 18 in BBS.

The TRD USA Eaton M62 s/c doesn't work with the MCV20 RHD models. There is clearance problems with the TRD S/C's pulley assembly and the actual steering column.
