I was gonna say that sales volume should have nothing to do with brand image, mmarshall, but on the second thought I guess you do have a valid point.

People tend to rank the image of their own cars higher (see the results of the many polls in CL that say "Which model year of ES/SC/LS do you like the best?"--many people just vote for their own cars

). Since there're far so many more VW owners than Porsche owners, chances are there were enough VW owners who ranked VW higher than Porsche even when they knew their cars' image did not compare to Porsche's.
