I've heard similar things. Among the larger gas companies, like Shell, ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, Sunoco, BPAmoco, Crown, etc., the gas is the same but the additives differ. I'd just pick one of the above and get the cheapest you can. I've also heard you should switch companies every few months so the additives of one clean out the additives of the other.
That said, I typically add ExxonMobil or Shell, whichever is cheaper, and add a 12 gallon tank bottle of Chevron's Techron additive to clean out the intakes, fuel injectors, and combustion chamber deposits every oil change (6 mo or ~7500 miles).

That is cheap...$2.19. The premium unleaded is around 2.83 here right now

Well the article said that each companies gas has some impurities in them and switching up every fill up allows the car to burn the impurities in the previous pumped gas.

I used to be a shell only person up until the BPAmoco station around here made their premium fuel 92 octane. Ever since I've switched and never used anything else.
What makes this thread even more freaky for me is that I have never ever used anything but Shell or BPAmoco (in my car anyways) ever since I started driving

Well since we are talking about fuels...never fillup when the gas tankers are refilling the underground tanks. That will kick the crap at the bottom of the tanks up (think water, dirt, etc.) and it will become a colloid which may get sucked up into your tank.
I used to fillup using Chevron but then recently switched to Shell and noticed an improvement in performance. So either the ppl at that Chevron station were marketing their 87 as 92 or the additives were detracting from the performance. I will probably go back to Chevron soon esp after tonight's little run-in with the asshat at the counter.

location location location, i did a little write up about it in another thread, you can fill up your gas at 3 different Shell stations, yet get awesome gas at one and sh(%$y quality in the others and so on.. one thing I can tell you, both shell and bp have some of the best gas out there, we generally use both at the lab where I work for quality control
