What I like about the rear is that it comes with a hatchback and not a stupid huge door like the current and new Rav4. It would be supirsed if all the safety features didn't come standard on all models of the new Sante Fe too. Watch out Rav4!!!

That's what I was thinking: the Santa Fe is a good value for what you get. It definately is a direct competitor of the Rav4. Since both cars have been redesigned, they will definately be fighting together for the entry-level small-mid sized SUV market.

They really need to get rid of that off-center door handle for the rear hatch. Otherwise it's a big improvement over the current

As I understand it, the Alabama plant will produce the next Santa Fe - which means it could be a quality disaster. Hyundai has taken a huge gamble in deciding on US production.

I hope they don't go the way of Nissan and grab share with flair and forget about quality and reliability altogether.

The Santa Fe, having been expanded in size and price, is no longer considered Hyundai's entry-level SUV. That role has been taken by the Tuscon...cousin to the Kia Sportage. The Santa Fe is now considered mid-sized and will go head-to-head with the Ford Explorer, Chevy Trail Blazer, etc...and of course the new RAV4.

The RAV4 has also gone up-sized and up-scale with the stretched redesign and the addition of a V6, but as of right now there is nothing in Toyota's fleet in the U.S. market to take the place of the old RAV4 as an entry-level SUV....although if all that is needed is AWD without the ground clearance the AWD Matrix will perform that role to some extent.

I thought that the Santa Fe competes against the likes of Highlander, Pilot, Murano and upcoming Ford Edge.

It does. I only used the Explorer and TrailBlazer as a couple of examples.....although the Santa Fe is not as off-road-capable as they are. Perhaps they are not the best examples....a minor slip-up on my part. Sorry. I agree with you that the Highlander and Pilot may be better examples. The Murano, yes, to some extent, but its weird styling and sub-standard interior quality turns some people off. I know Henry ( Rominl ) likes it, though.

Good catch, though...you brought up a good point.

Default 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe starts at $21,595

2007 Hyundai Santa Fe starts at $21,595
Erin Robinson | | Automotive News / June 22, 2006 - 4:41 pm

LOS ANGELES -- Hyundai Motor America has cut $700 from the sticker price of the base model Santa Fe SUV for the 2007 model year.

The redesigned Santa Fe carries a base price of $21,595, including shipping, the company said Thursday. The price drop comes even as the automaker increases the shipping charge from $600 for the 2006 model to $650 for the 2007 model.

The 2007 will reach dealerships this month, the automaker said.

Buyers can choose from three trim levels -- GLS, SE and Limited. Standard equipment includes stability control, side-impact and side curtain airbags, antilock brakes and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

Changes include the addition of a third row of seats that folds into the floor. The new Santa Fe is 7 inches longer than the 2006 model.

The base engine is a 2.7-liter V-6 rated at 185 hp. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, while a four-speed automatic is optional.

The 2007 Santa Fe SE has a base sticker price of $24,295, including shipping charges. The SE trim is equipped with a 3.3-liter V-6 producing 242 hp with a five-speed automatic transmission.

The Santa Fe Limited has a base sticker price of $26,595 with shipping charges and adds equipment such as leather seats, heated front seats and automatic temperature control.

Through the first five months of this year, the Santa Fe's U.S. sales totaled 18,033 units, down 40.9 percent from the same period in 2005.

The 2007 Santa Fe is being built at the company's Montgomery, Ala., plant, which also builds the Hyundai Sonata.
