No doubt the G35 is a capable car, both in sedan and coupe form. How much additional value given to the M3 for it's increased performance is, of course, entirely subjective.

For me, I'd take the M3. Even more points for the SMG, which is both practical and fun.
I will agree with mike on this one. the M3 definately outperforms as well as outclasses the G35.

This is how you need to think about it now that everyone has talked about performance, mods, value, etc...

Think about what older cars (5 years old) still make you think you wouldn't mind driving them...

To me:

The M3 has aged well...and M5 for that matter!
So has the CLK55...add some nice wheels and a drop!
Porsche...always in style!
NSX...still exotic and makes heads turn.
S2000...the design is classic...add some mods and

I don't think the G will age as well...I had an infiniti and looking back I can't believe I drove that thing...it has depreciated into the ghetto.

And just to prove i'm not a G35 hater...this is one of the clean/best looking G35 Sedans i've seen around...and we've discussed this in the SoCal section not too long ago. With the right wheels, suspension drop and even just with the factory Aero package...it's not bad looking at all. I also come to find out the big Stoptechs and Coilovers the owner runs is fully functional during his track days:

Thats definetely true, but with a few mods on the G and it can outperform an M3....and for alot cheaper too. But then again, they are no where near the same class. When the GT-R comes out, that would be the M3's real competition

That maybe true, but it's never going to have an appeal of an M3.

On paper it sounds good but where would we measure this? A few mods? This is not a few (what is needed to be competative with a M3)
1. Coilovers
2. Supercharger
3. Better tires and bigger wheels.
4. Upgraded sway bars
5. Other suspension pieces.

At that point, your at 50k easy, and just get a NEW M3. The M3 is a born racer. Its raced by BMW. The G35 is not. On paper it sounds good but it would lack the feeling of cohesiveness the M has. And its not just the G35, most modded cars sound great on paper but lack the R&D and racing heritage of factory tuned cars.

Now its not to say we can't beat a M3 with a modded G35 or any other modded car but not for say $3,000 dollars. You got to dump at least 10 grand into whatever your modding.

Where are the specs on the M3? Got any? I didn't think its handling wasn't that far off from the G35. Btw, don't forget the G35 is the 350GT skyline in Japan, and it was born racing there.

LOL you should state that the G35's handling is not far off from the M3, not the other way around. The M3 is superior to the G35 in many ways.

True, from a hard-edged performance point of view........no arguments there. But the G35 is a better daily driver. If i had to commute to work and back every day in one and do errands I would choose the G35 hands-down.

This was the generation M3 that had engine problems. If you look at one, check the VIN, vehicle history, service bulletins, etc... and consider an extended engine warranty. BMW has replaced some of the engines on some of these cars free of charge....but there is no guarantee of this once the standard factory warranty runs out....although a recall may be in the works:

Sir, I can give specs but the M3 has won every single superlative in the automotive press. In Europe its a constant Car of the Year and Sports Car of the Year contender. Its considered the sports car to get with the 911. I understand the 350GT is kind of a racing car but not close to the M3, which uses in one version the M3 GTR in racing. I am not saying the G35 is a slouch in any form, the car handles better than most and if perfect for most but ARGUABLY, its as good or slightly not as good or slightly better than a BMW 330. That is the G35s competiton and it matches the 330 very well.

Specs
http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images/e46m3-1.jpg (333hp in the USA, 360hp in CSL form) from a 3.3 I-6. So more power, less displacement.

CSL and GTR

What model year would the M3 have to be for you to be able to get it at $30k?
