It is to my knowledge, from several sources, that cheaper gas stations cut a deal with the large gas suppliers to buy the gas at a lower price. This gas they buy however, comes less filtered and from the so called "bottom of the tank," hence, containing more crap and imperfections. I use Exxon Supreme 93 octane ALWAYS in my SC, and buy gas on Tiger Tuesdays ($0.05 off every Tuesday). (Gotta pick the stations carefully, some scumbags will raise the price 3 cents on Monday night, and take 5 off on Tuesday, effectively only saving you 2 cents on the gallon.)
Generally speaking, there is a bare minimum standard for the gas you can sell, according to the ?EPA? These lower end stations may barely, or not even, meet these standards.

This has been covered several times, once in a thread I myself started. Lexus engines (or any engine for that matter) are built for the octane rating stated in the Lexus Manual (90+). Without the proper fuel, you will develop a multitude of minor disagreements with your car. Your engine will be the first to knock. I always use 93 in my car, and 94 any chance i can afford gas at Shell

i had this discussion at another forum i frequent.
an individual researcher dude did gasoline test and see if any manufacturer claims were true. (Shell V-Power, Chevron Techron, etc.)
he found that after extensive testing...the Techron additives in Chevron fuel was the only gasoline that actually benefited the engine. he mentioned also that Shell has a slightly higher concentration of sulfur in comparison to other gasoline manufacturers--which isn't entirely good.
