Chrysler Group Reports June 2005 Monthly and Q2 Sales Rise

- Highest Second Quarter Sales Since 2000 for Chrysler Group - Chrysler Brand Sales Continue Strong Performance, Posting 16 Percent Increase; Quarterly Sales Achieve New Record of nearly 190,000 units - Quarterly Jeep Brand Sales Increase 33 Percent; Best Second Quarter Performance Since 2000 - Dodge Charger Sales Accelerate 118 Percent Over May 2005 Sales - Exclusive Stow 'n Go(R) Seating Drives Chrysler Group Minivans to 12 Percent Increase

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 1 -- Chrysler Group reported sales for June 2005 of 220,032 units, an increase of 1 percent (5 percent unadjusted) over June 2004 sales of 209,252 units. Second quarter sales of 641,153 units increased 4 percent over 2004 second quarter sales and marked the seventh consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales gains for the Chrysler Group. Sales are calculated on a day-rate adjusted basis unless specified.

"We achieved our seventh consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales growth and all of our key product segments such as minivans and sports tourers performed well, while overall company sales growth improved over last year," said Gary Dilts, Chrysler Group Senior Vice President - Sales. "Our performance this quarter and year-to-date gives us nearly two years of consistent, steady growth."

Sales gains for the month and the quarter were led by key segments such as minivans and sports tourers, along with popular products like the Chrysler 300 and the all-new Dodge Charger, which started arriving in dealer showrooms in June. On the strength of the exclusive Stow 'n Go(R) seating system, Chrysler Group minivans rose 12 percent to post sales of 44,747 units during June. Quarterly minivan sales also increased 9 percent to 125,394, while year-to- date sales outpaced last year by 13 percent to 226,908 units.

Chrysler brand sales increased 16 percent to 65,594 units, establishing another monthly sales record for the brand. Sales of Chrysler 300 at 11,504 units, Chrysler PT Cruiser at 11,727 units and Chrysler Town & Country minivan, with the exclusive Stow 'n Go(R) seating at 22,288, led the way for the brand. Quarterly sales for the brand also set a record with 188,622 units sold, an increase of 16 percent over 2004 second quarter sales. Year-to-date sales for the Chrysler brand posted strong sales of 344,384 units, improving 21 percent over the same period last year.

Sales of the Dodge brand declined 15 percent to 107,997 units, however, sales of the all-new Dodge Charger continue to accelerate as the vehicle continues to arrive at Dodge dealerships nationwide. Sales of the Dodge Charger surged in June to 4,354 units, topping May 2005 sales by 118 percent. Jeep sales continued their positive momentum as sales increased 33 percent to 46,441 units. Quarterly sales for the legendary brand rose by 12 percent to 127,257 units, while year-to-date sales rose by 3 percent to 230,969 units. Led by Jeep Grand Cherokee with sales of 23,944 units, the flagship vehicle for the Jeep brand saw sales rise by 78 percent. Quarterly and year-to-date sales both rose for the Grand Cherokee, with quarterly sales increasing 31 percent to 60,420 units, and year-to-date sales rising 14 percent to 107,534 units.

"Consumer confidence is still strong, and interest rates are still at record lows while the economy continues making steady forward progress ," said Dilts. "Our consistent, steady growth for seven consecutive quarters has mirrored the steady growth of the economy. It's a great time to buy a car."

Chrysler Group finished the month with 631,283 units of inventory, or a 75-day supply.

Default Discounts pump up GM's U.S. sales

Sales jump 41 percent over last June; Asians also show healthy gains; Ford and Chrysler lag

By Tom Brown / Reuters

DETROIT -- Big consumer incentives delivered blockbuster results for General Motors Corp. in June, with its U.S. sales jumping 41 percent over the same month last year, largely at the expense of Detroit-based rivals.

Ford Motor Co. lost the most market share, as it posted its 13th consecutive month of lower U.S. vehicle sales. Like GM, the No. 2 U.S. automaker is struggling to stop bleeding money in its core operations.

Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan Motor Corp. also posted double-digit gains, and Toyota said its first-half sales were the best-ever in 48 years of doing business in the United States.

The stronger-than-expected increase at GM was driven by steep discounts that could hurt its bottom line. But it gave temporary relief to the world's largest automaker, boosting GM's market share and offsetting sales declines that contributed to a $1.1 billion first-quarter loss.

It was the company's strongest sales month since September 1986, and GM said it set an all-time industry record for light truck sales, which were up 68 percent.

Shares in GM rose 2 percent, helping to lift blue-chip stocks in the day.

The company's deals lured customers away from the showrooms of Ford and others, including the Chrysler unit of Germany's DaimlerChrysler, analysts said.

"GM took sales from everybody with this program of theirs but I think they took most of it from Ford and Chrysler," said David Healy of Burnham Securities.

"GM stole the month with the program," he added, referring to GM's "Employee Discount for Everyone" incentives strategy.

The increase in GM's sales of light trucks, a category that includes SUVs, pickups and minivans, bucked a worrisome trend for U.S. automakers, which have recently seen sales of large, fuel-thirsty vehicles slump dramatically in the face of rising U.S. gasoline prices.

June delivered more sobering results for other automakers as they struggled to compete with GM's incentives.

Chrysler, which said on Friday that it would launch a discount program similar to GM's next week, posted a wafer-thin 1 percent rise in June sales. And Ford's sales of new cars and trucks fell 2.5 percent. The result was adjusted for one more selling day in June this year and excludes Ford's foreign brands.

Ford's chief sales analyst George Pipas said the company had its best sales results so far this year. But he said everyone had been hurt by GM's success.

"We stand in the shadow of GM, okay? But, hey, guess what, so does everybody else," Pipas said.

Vehicle sales across the industry strengthened 11 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 17.5 million in June. That was far above the 15.4 million rate in June last year and 16.6 million in May.

GM's marketing strategy, under which it now sells anybody a new car or truck at the same price a GM employee would pay, resonated with consumers because it eliminated the price negotiations so many car shoppers dread, analysts said.

Squeezing GM Margins

But in offering all customers the same discount as employees, GM may also be sacrificing profit by squeezing its margins, a concern that has rung alarm bells on Wall Street.

"We believe this is likely the most expensive marketing program ever run by GM," Rod Lache, who tracks the auto industry for Deutsche Bank, said in a research note.

He said the high cost of GM's employee discount represented a $900 escalation in cost per vehicle in incentives over May.

Paul Ballew, GM's head of global market and industry analysis, told reporters and analysts on a conference call that GM's incentives were flat or up just slightly month-over-month, however.

GM's June performance gave it a near 33 percent share of the U.S. light vehicle market, an impressive gain from a 25.8 percent share in May.

But Lache cautioned that deep discounts would also weigh on the automaker's second-quarter earnings and cash flow.

Furthermore, whatever fleeting success GM has with its firesale marketing, analysts predict more long-term share erosion for it and other Detroit automakers. GM and Ford both face hyper-competition from Asian rivals with new vehicle offerings and attractive models across the entire market.

Nissan said its U.S. sales were up 14 percent in June. The result was driven by demand for Nissan's Altima mid-size sedan and its new Pathfinder SUV, Jed Connelly, the company's North American sales chief, told Reuters.

Toyota, meanwhile, said its U.S. sales rose 10 percent over June 2004 and Honda Motor Co. Ltd. said its sales were up 4.7 percent.

GM shares closed up 65 cents on the New York Stock Exchange at $34.65, while Ford closed up 7 cents at $10.31.

Sure seems like the RL missed its mark. I'm not sure what Acura could do (other than price cutting) to up RL sales.

Seems to me that the moral of these figures might be: don't shove AWD at people when RWD will do. Audi and Acura are in the same boat - they just can't let go (probably because of financial reasons) of their FWD heritage and come up with real RWD platforms to really compete.

I wonder if the lack of M35/45 sales break down by Infinit is intentional.

The RL isn't really doing too badly given that they only offer one loaded V6 AWD model with no other choices given to the potential buyer. Had they offer a V8, they probably would have sold a couple hundred more per month. It will look better on paper for them but they probably don't care, since the V8's of the competitors only make up a small % of the total sales in this class anyway.

Lexus and BMW are the only companies that break down V8/V6 sales. None of the above brands break it down, not just Infiniti.

Actually BMW is the best in this regard, since they also break down AWD and wagon sales. Lexus doesn't.

In california dealers are selling the RL for like $41,500-$43K dollars which is below invoice. Some dealers are heavily stocked with those to make room for 06's and also because sales are just so pitiful for the division.

Thats an EXCELLENT price for an RL for what it gives you.
