Default Your opinions about the Audi S8

I can't shake the Audi S8 from being on the top of my "most wanted" list. I don't know much about the ownership experience from Audi or the realiablity of the S8 (2001-2002). All I know is that I'm still in love with the shape and expecially the interior - nobody does it better than Audi! I'm not in a heavy snow area, so I don't HAVE to have an AWD vehicle, but the total package the S8 brings is making me ponder the future of my GS. Your thoughts?

That gen 8 Audi is gorgeous. My friend's dad had one of the few A8Ls at the time and the inside of that thing looked like a jet-liner at night with all of the ambient red LED lighting. The only thing it was missing was the S package, and if anyone's seen Ronin, you know why I say that.

I say get it, it's beautiful, and unlike the RS6, it's affordable if you're between that and a 2GS. Word is, they're gonna be coming out with a new S8...

The S8 is an great car with good performance and over here it was sold with either a 6spd manual or an tiptronic auto.

The regular A8 is a marvelous touring car and highway cruiser, but the S8, IMO, is clearly overkill for American roads. Same with the AMG and M-cars. They are designed primarily for German driving conditions and unlimited Autobahn speeds that are clearly illegal.......and often dangerous...... here in the U.S.

Audi S8 Pics & Specifications, no longer too impressive by the standards of the new ultra high performance sedans available today. The new 750i will likely outperform it, not to mention the S55/600/65.

This car is great! When it comes to full size luxury cars, this A8 is only second the old body 7 Series

After seeing that pic and reading about it a little bit I decided to head over to the Audi dealership for a nice saturday test drive.

The cars I drove were a Dark Blue 2001 S8 with 44,xxx miles and a Silver 2005 A8L with 3,8xx miles.

First drive: 05' A8L. This car is HUGE! Getting in was painless and the second I slipped into the drivers seat I knew I was sitting in a well built machine. Pulling out of the dealership I was quite amazed. Suprizingly it didn't have the germanic feel the 745's do and the brakes felt nothing like the S-class's. Being such a Lexus fanatic I had expected the steering and brakes to be totally foreign to me. What I found was the exact opposite. The steering was a carbon copy of my 94 GS and to my absolute disbelief it seemed to handle like my IS! Acceleration was quiet and quick. I kinda understand where people are coming from when they call Lexus bland. The A8L handled and drove with the soul I was looking for without success in the LS430. My only complaint would be that the navi wasn't touch screen and it clearly lacked a small list of features found in the LS.

Second drive: 01' S8. I'll summarize. Got in, drove around, A8L looked faster and 10 years newer. End of story.

Conclusion: If I ever cheated on Lexus, it'd be with a new A8L.

For autobahn-type cruising and the traction of the Audi Quattro system, I would agree.....but nothing IMO beats the LS430 as a straight luxury car, although obviously I have never driven a Maybach and cannot comment on that car directly.

I've always loved the S8. By super sedan standards today it may be outdated, but back in the late 90's it was definitely a unique car.

If you think you love it now, watch them movie "Ronin"--- SWEET CAR CHASE SCENES.... the exhaust on the S8 sounds AMAZING.
