GfK Automotive Identifies Top Ten Cars for Men and Women: Men Are from 'Porsche Land' ... Women Are from 'Pontiac-Ville'

NEW YORK, July 11 -- According to new data from GfK Automotive, men and women really are different when it comes to their next new car purchase. Fast and expensive vehicles drive men to take out their checkbooks while women are on the lookout for affordable, family-friendly wheels.

For men, the Porsche 911 is the biggest draw, with both the coupe and convertible models making the Top Ten List (#1 and #10 respectively). Men also gravitate toward the exotic end of the auto spectrum with the Maserati Spyder, Jaguar XK8 coupe and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution all appearing on the radar screen for the next car or truck they plan to purchase.

The ladies' list, however, reads like a lesson in financial planning 101, with most cars costing under $30,000. The top pick is the Pontiac G6 convertible ... a coincidence, perhaps due to Oprah's mega giveaway of the sedan version this past September. The Volkswagen Beetle appears twice, in both sedan and convertible form. Two Kia models-the Rio sedan and the Optima- have also made an impression on wallet-conscious females, taking the number nine and ten spots, respectively.

Interestingly, the one common thread for men and women is that both groups prefer foreign-made vehicles over their US counterparts.

"It seems the cliches are indeed true," according to Doug Scott, Senior Vice President, GfK Automotive. "Men are drawn to higher-priced 'performance' cars, with 41% citing looks and design as a key consideration. Women, on the other hand, want the more conservative, 'value' models ... affordable, fun and practical."

Wow...the difference between the picks of men and women is a galaxy wide..

Still having a hard time understanding why the G6 is on top of the women's list... Would I look sexier to women if I drove a G6 convertible for dates?

sounds like a bunch of loser guys picked out those cars....

guys dont go for looks mostly, they go for performance(at least the crowd here would)

it has to look, and drive well

and many of those cars, i.e. 6series convertible..... seriously....

since we are saying supercars here, why not lamborghini or something

they should have limited the cars to lower $ limit for guys.... also, girls may not pick supercars or expensive cars bc they are unaware of them, it's not that they don't want to drive them. it's that they don't know about them, how they look, or their performance.

ask any girl about a ford gt, maserati spyder, jaguar xk8 and see if they can describe them for you....

It's interesting that the Jaguar XK8 coupe is on the list & yet the total XK8 coupe/convertibles sales are low compared to it's competitors, plus the coupe version actually accounts for only a small % of total XK8 sales, yet the XK8 convertible is not on the list. Maybe people surveyed talking about buying certain cars of their dreams are different from the people actually buying them
The Mercedes CL on the top male list is also a very slow seller, it's less than 100 last month & usually not too much more than that . . .

The men's list looks relatively reasonable. I have no problem believing the polled results.

But the women's list cannot be right. Suzuki Forenza second most desirable car for women? 2 Kia's in the top 10? I would wager that 90% of all women out there don't even know what a Suzuki Forenza is. And not a single BMW, MB, or Lexus on the women's list? Unbelievable. Even if this poll targeted cost conscious women, I'd still expect to see an Accord, Camry, or Civic over any of these smaller brands.

"...nationally representative sample of 200,000 US households." Yeah right.
