Even Toyota had it back in early 2000 (which means they must have been working on the design for at about a year) with the ECHO.
FYI, the Z9 concept first debuted September 1999.

I'm on record here as supporting the Bangle designs time and again. Despite the opinion of many around the world, somebody else besides us few must also like them. I've read that the 7 series has outsold all the previous models combined. People are also beginning to warm up to the other models as well. You see more everyday around here. Even the Z4, which I didn't really like is selling and has grown on me. I'm confused by some of the guys here. We like the bulbous, non-symmetrical designs of the GS and SC430 but no love for the equally stylish but different bimmers. IMO, auto design was very cookie cutter. Bangle stepped off the cookie sheet, sells a lot of cars and gets criticized for it. I'll bet the BMW royalty like him...they're making money.

Ironic that the only people who DO NOT want it.................. are the bimmer guy's. They seem to hate anything Bangle for taking away their loved designs and going with the latest "out there" creation.

I am a diehard BMW guy and I hate Bangle cars.
I don't care if people are buying this design here and there. The truth is, BMW has lost the distinctiveness and character it once had and to me, this is a fatal move. Pretty soon in the near future, it would not matter to me what I drive because cars from different manufacturers are going to look so much alike anyway.
By then, the more important factors in choosing one car over another (for me at least) would be its quality, craftsmanship, and durability. The last time I checked, BMW was not on the top of such list.

Agreed with Harrier and ST430.
I'm frankly getting irritated by everyone referring to it as the "Bangle butt". Bangle did not come up with this design, and it's not something unique. It's simply a styling cue that other makers have used in the past. It gives the trunk an edgier and somewhat sportier look, as opposed to having a round and smooth look.
