The Mustang V8 has always had a popular, distinctive sound. So have the Corvette and some other versions of the Chevy-Pontiac 5.7L V8.

IMO the 350Z/G35 are the best sounding cars out there for now

I like my SC400 V8. The stock sound is the best I've heard. Not whiney but not too obnoxiously loud.

Who said import motors sound so good?? The 350 sounds decent but doesn't do much for me. I agree with MMarshall regarding the distinctive sound of a mustang and corvette. To me the sound of a 4.6l or 5.0l mustang with off road exhaust is pure ear candy. And just to show I'm not only partial to V8's, listen to a Grand National exhaust. Incredible sound for a V6. Me, I'm just not a huge fan of smaller displacement exhaust notes. Especially 4 cyl up at 6000 rpm. But to each there own.
I also despise onions!

short of ferraris or carrera gt's, i think the g35 coupe has the best sounding stock exhaust note. i think u guys are talkin about exhaust notes and not engine sounds.

It's all in the exhaust tuning which gives it that distinct note.

My bad. I immediately classified "import motor" as 4 & 6 cyl.

I agree!!!
I wanted to get this sound/note for my GS300, but of course wasn't possible when I asked here on CL.
Not even remotely possible especially when it's a 300 instead of a 400.

I agree with mmarshall on the mustangs

A lot of it is perception. People just think anything import sounds, feels, tastes better than American.

Agreed, a bit unfair to put all 'american' cars into one category. I know some import engines that sound like garbage too.

Hondas with extremely large mufflers. You all know the ones... Where it rattles the entire chassis and is high pitched even at low RPMs.

...I take that back... any engine not just Hondas.
Any engine with an excessive exhaust for the engine.
I really don't like teh American muscle car sound, unless it's an actual muscle car from the 60s and 70s, and maybe some 80s ones.

I always hated the last two gen. Camaros and 5.0 mustang, mostly based upon looks but when someone puts straight pipes on them... ugh... it just sounds so obnoxious.

i think the best import motors are the uh AMG55 kompressor engines...as jeremy clarkson puts it..sounds like "the god of thunder eating wasps.." a deep propeller engine sound. real hot.

the G35/350z Renault V6 engines have been fine tuned to sound that way...the exhaust timing, cats, etc. have all been tuned to give off that toned sexy sound...

Ever heard what a VQ35 sounds like at idle? Especially those that end up in rental fleets and only have 2k miles on them.
