Mercedes-Benz USA Records Highest July on Record
MONTVALE, N.J., Aug. 2, 2005
Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported its highest July on record with sales of 20,791 new vehicles, an increase of 9.6 percent from last July. This brings the year-to-date sales total to 119,425 vehicles.
With consumers continuing to take road trips to their favorite vacation spots this summer, year-to-date sales increased for Mercedes-Benz coupes, convertibles and luxury light trucks. Year-to-date sales are also strong for AMG models, posting an increase of 15.5 percent over year-to-date 2004.
The month showed a significant jump in SLK-Class sales which increased 325 percent over July 2004. Highlights for the month also included an 11.3 percent sales increase for the E-Class, and gains for the all-new 2006 M-Class, which is up 41.5 percent over July 2004.
"Momentum continues to build from the spring launch of the M-Class and we are gearing up for the introduction of 2006 R-Class this fall. These vehicles boost our representation in the luxury light truck segment, positioning 2005 to be another strong year for Mercedes-Benz sales in the U.S.," said Paul Halata, president and CEO of MBUSA.
Separately, the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned vehicle program reported July sales of 3,924 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 26,980.
In 2004, MBUSA achieved its eleventh consecutive year of sales growth by setting the highest sales volume in its history with 221,610 new vehicle sales. Headquartered in Montvale, N.J., MBUSA is responsible for the sales, marketing and service of all Mercedes-Benz products in the United States. BMW clearly benefited significantly from the addition of the AWD 5 series. Those accounted for about 1200 of the total 5 series sales. These didn't exist just a few months ago.
Mercedes... I don't know. I guess people like the new V6 engine. It's still a Mercedes. And many MB loyalists refuse to consider anything else. I suspect that the YTD decline of the E is due more to the CLS than anything else.
Audi is the loser here. A brand new model selling worse than the outgoing model in its last year of sales. That's gotta hurt. It is a very good car though. Maybe it's poor marketing or that big mouth grill is too "out there" for these conservative buyers.

July a record-breaking month
DETROIT -- General Motors, Ford and Chrysler posted double-digit U.S. sales gains for July on Tuesday as hefty discounts delivered blowout results for the Big 3.
Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. and Nissan North America Inc., meanwhile, said they posted their best sales month in the United States. Ford Motor Co. reported the best sales month ever for its F-series pickup.
The seasonal adjusted annualized rate for July was 20,974,269, according to the Automotive News Data Center.
DaimlerChrysler, including Mercedes-Benz, sold 260,945 units in July, a boost of 25.1 percent for the month. Year-to-date, the automaker has sold 1,547,536 vehicles, up 6.9 percent from the same period in 2004.
GM said its July sales rose 15.2 percent, boosted by the GM Employee Discount for Everyone incentive program. The automaker said its U.S. sales totaled 524,218 vehicles in July compared with 454,963 in July last year. For the year, GM has sold 2,844,839 vehicles, a 4.3 percent increase from the same time last year. Those numbers include Saab.
Paul Ballew, GM's chief sales analyst, said 71 percent of retail sales in July came from trucks, and he predicted that the automaker would achieve a market share of 27 percent for the year. He said Tuesday that GM has 695,642 units or a 40-day supply of 2005 total dealer inventory in the field. That's 465,133 fewer vehicles than GM had last July. A 60-day supply is considered healthy.
Employee pricing gave Ford Motor sales a much-needed 28.5 percent increase for the month and triggered record monthly sales for the Ford F-series pickup. Ford sold 126,905 F-series last month, well above its previous record of 102,424 in October 2001, set in the post-Sept. 11 sales frenzy of 0 percent financing. Ford numbers include Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo, but not Mazda.
Ford executives pushed F-series sales hard in July after losing the monthly pickup sales crown to Chevrolet in June. Dealers and customers responded as F-series sales increased 58 percent from last July's 80,253.
"Without a doubt, the overwhelming success of our Ford Family Plan and our innovative promotion with the Home Depot helped drive F-series sales through the roof in July," said Ford Division President Darryl Hazel in a prepared statement.
Ford offered special Home Depot merchandise packages with the purchase of its pickups in July.
July sales for Ford Motor lifted the automaker's year-to-date sales total to 1,974,377, or 0.2 percent better than the first seven months of 2004.
Ford's F-series record brought a couple of boasts from Ford officials. They said the July mark is the most sales of any single nameplate in any month since the days of the Ford Model T. But since manufacturers reported production numbers back then, a comparable sales number is not available, the company said.
Ford also said that July's F-series sales generated enough revenue to rank the nameplate in the annual Fortune 500 rankings. Ford wouldn't provide a revenue number, but it is estimated to be around $3.5 billion.
Sales for Mazda, of which Ford is a partial owner, also benefited in July, climbing 5.7 percent from last July.
Toyota sales, including Lexus and Scion, jumped 8.1 percent with a total of 216,417 vehicles, bringing its year-to-date sales to 1,330,487, a 10.4 percent increase from the same period in 2004.
American Honda Motor Co., including Acura, posted an increase of 10.3 percent for the month and 2.4 percent for the year. Hyundai Motor America sales, including Kia, climbed 10.5 percent in July. For the year, it is up 8.2 percent.
Nissan said combined Nissan and Infiniti sales in July were 15.0 percent better than last July, bringing its annual total fo the year so far to 650,021, which is 14.8 percent better than its year-to-date sales in 2004.
BMW, including Mini and Rolls-Royce, had a strong month, reporting an 11.4 percent sales increase. Sales are up 2.4 percent so far this year.
Porsche reported a 3.7 percent sales increase for July. Suzuki sales for the month climbed 10.2 percent, while Subaru increased 2.1 percent.
Not every manufacturer found reason to celebrate in July.
Volkswagen's U.S. car sales declined 12.0 percent to 28,857 units in July. That brought U.S. sales for the first seven months to 164,972 units, down 16.5 percent. Numbers include Audi and Bentley.
Isuzu and Mitsubishi continued their downward trajectories, although Mitsubishi managed to keep its fall within single digits. Mitsubishi sold 10,376 vehicles, a fall of 7.3 percent, while Isuzu sold only 845 vehicles in July, a whopping 69.3 percent drop from the same month last year.
July's torrid pace is unlikely to be sustainable, analysts say.
"The inevitable hangover is on the way," analyst David Healy of Burnham Securities said in a recent research note.
In the same note, Healy commented on one of the fundamental problems facing U.S. automakers, which seem unable to sell any but a handful of models without rebates and discounts galore.
"Although Detroit has for all practical purposes closed the U.S./Asian quality gap, the perception that American companies still produce garbage, as they actually did during much of the 1970s and 1980s, is proving most difficult to eradicate," Healy said.
"The poor quality of many of these old models has bred a new generation of car buyers who would never consider entering a domestic brand showroom," he added.
GM and Ford both said on Monday that they are trimming sticker prices for many vehicles in the 2006 model year. By contrast, Toyota has said its 2006 prices will be slightly higher.

While the auto buisness today, of course, is global, and Detroit does in fact build more reliable cars in general today than they did 20-30 years ago, they have NOT closed the U.S./ Asian quality gap.....the difference IMO is still very noticeable. Almost anyone with two good eyes, hands, and a brain can tell the difference in fit-and-finish between the typical American-designed Ford, GM, or Dodge/Chrysler and the better vehicles from Japan and Korea. I can sometimes tell the difference blindfolded.....simply from feel alone.
Of course, that does not mean that Asian vehicles are not without fault sometimes.....recent Nissan / Infiniti interiors and the inability of Toyota to produce trucks that truly compete with large American pickups are two good examples.

OK since AmethySC started this foreign sales report, I'm gonna throw in the Taiwanese July sales report as well just for the heck of it: In July, Toyota achieved an unprecedented market share of 34.7%, the highest ever recorded so far in the entire Taiwanese automotive history. Very impressive.

Edmunds.com Reports Mid-Month August Auto Sales: Imports Thrive as Domestic Inventory and Momentum Diminish
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 18, 2005 -- Most import automakers have had remarkably good sales in August so far, according to Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information.
Edmunds.com reports that Honda's U.S. market share was over 9.5% in the first two weeks of the month, compared with 8% in July. Honda's highest monthly market share was 9.1%, achieved in August 2003. (These figures include both the Acura and Honda brands.)
According to Edmunds.com, Toyota's U.S. market share exceeded 15% in the first two weeks of August. In July, Toyota captured 12% of the market. Toyota's highest monthly market share was 14.0%, achieved in April of this year. (These figures include the Lexus, Scion and Toyota brands.)
Nissan is also having a successful August so far, increasing its U.S. market share from 6% in July to 6.5% in the first two weeks of the month. Nissan's highest market share was 7.2%, achieved in January of this year. (These figures include both the Infiniti and Nissan brands.)
Collectively, European brands reached nearly 7% U.S. market share in the first half of August. This is a high point for the group so far in 2005. In July, European market share was 5.8%.
The domestic automakers, on the other hand, did not have particularly strong sales in the first half of the month. Chrysler achieved 13% U.S. market share in the first two weeks of August, just as it did in the entire month of July. Ford suffered a slight market share decline, slipping from nearly 20% in July to around 19% in the first half of August.
"We can expect relative increases in the market share for both Ford and Chrysler in the later part of the month, especially if they announce that they will not extend the employee plan promotions beyond the Labor Day deadline," advised Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jesse Toprak.
Edmunds.com noted that in the first half of August, General Motor's market share fell below 25% -- a sharp contrast to July, when GM captured 29% of the marketplace.
"GM's success earlier this summer has really taken its toll on inventory levels for several models, limiting their ability to have another terrific month," stated Toprak. "And there appears to be relatively little momentum left in GM's employee discount incentive program now that it is in its third month."
Edmunds.com analysts expect average prices are likely to rise in August. The average sticker price in July 2005 reached a record high of more than $31,000 (up $1,500 compared to a year ago), thanks mainly to the employee purchase price promotions, which have enabled consumers to purchase more expensive vehicles and additional optional equipment. Average transaction price, on the other hand, was $26,500 in July, up $850 compared to July 2004.

The 2005 Legacy, though, got more attention than in the past due to the introduction of the new GT Turbo model and its popularity with enthusiasts. It has been referred to as the "STi for adults".
