Default Dealers: GM extends employee discounts

Sources say the popular "Employee Discount for Everyone" program will continue through Sept. 6.

DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. is extending its popular employee discount program, under which it is offering anybody in the United States a new car or truck at the same price a GM employee would pay, dealer sources said Tuesday.

They said the "Employee Discount for Everyone" program, which GM introduced on June 1, would continue through Sept. 6.

GM (up $0.26 to $37.12, Research), which said last week that the program would end this week, declined immediate comment.

Ford Motor Co. (up $0.13 to $10.98, Research) and the Chrysler arm of DaimlerChrysler (up $1.30 to $50.67, Research) -- which followed GM's lead by offering employee pricing last month -- have also extended the programs as they sell down inventories of 2005 model-year vehicles.

Ford also set a Sept. 6 deadline for the program, but Chrysler spokesman Kevin McCormick said Tuesday that its so-called "Employee Pricing Plus" program was open-ended.

"As long as we have '05 inventory on the ground, we're going to keep it going," McCormick said.

GM's employee discounts delivered blockbuster sales for the world's largest automaker in June, with U.S. sales jumping 41 percent over the same month last year.

GM's July sales results were due to be released later on Tuesday, along with those of other leading automakers.

I wonder how many more times they'll "extend" the deal... seems like they'd be better off by just not putting a deadline on it.

This will be the last one, because they have already marked down their sticker prices for 2006 models. I think this is just to continue to compete with Ford's pricing plan, which goes until September, followed by Ford's lowering of sticker prices.
