I'd wait for the 550... I am intrigued by this new blue color you mentioned. The current 5 does NOTHING for me in black.
Can you get it without the horrid BMW i-Drive? If not, that would be a deal breaker for me.
Either way, you'll get to drive plenty of 3-series (loaner cars) while the 5 is in the shop. Unfortunately, I think of any new BMW as a great "36 month" car- great to drive (but EXTREMELY common here in CA) but I would not want to own one once the warranty runs out. A good friend of mine has a 545i Sport which he curses about every few weeks when he gets stuck driving a "lowly" 3-series...

Unfortunately I-Drive is not an option - but Active Steering is!
I don't want to get into a debate about 5-series reliability - suffice to say that my past BMWs were very reliable and my friend with a 545 has only visted the shop once for a software upgrade. Of course he has an 05 and each year they have gotten progressively more reliable - just like the 7 series. Rule#1, never buy a first year German car!
