Acura RL, the good and the bad

And right now, informed buyers are letting Acura dealers know that they are not willing to pay MSRP for these cars, or the majority of cars for that matter. Do such deep discounts hurt the resale value? Definately. So would I recommend buying this vehicle with the intent to sell it down the line? No. It's either a keeper or a lease. The latter being my choice. Anyhow, I would be angry too, if I had initially purchased at the $50K range to find out the car is now selling at the $40K range. But those are the risks we take when we play the buy now or buy later game.
RON430 - I get between 21-23mpg mixed city/hwy driving. In terms of roominess, it's adequate for me, my girl, our luggage, and snowboards when we hit up Tahoe

Its also BIGGER than offering a V-8. YOU CANNOT sell your luxury car fot 10k less when its a BRAND NEW model!! It destroys desirability, resale, prestige, its like GM, an unwanted car UNLESS its cheaper than everything else.
At 39k, you can NOW get a TL for the same or even MORE. A loaded flaghship costs as much as its lesser class stablemate.
Imagine a E500 priced like a C320!

But this is not meant to be construed that at 40K this thing isn't a flat out buy.

1Sick - I agree a V8 would change the character of this car a lot, but a couple of points on that...
- First off, Acura has tried (maybe unsuccessfully) to use their original Honda 'loaded bundled car' approach with the RL - you'd agree it does include a ton of cool stuff without being nickled and dimed in options packages.
- Question: if it DID offer a V8, especially in combo with the cool SH-AWD, how would you rate the RL then?
And I personally would take the current RL over the current GS300 any day. Although I haven't driven it (I have driven the new GS430) the new GS300 has got to feel slow with that engine and the very conservative programming of the tranny and the RL's handling has been praised.

One more thought, and this might be better in a new thread, but does anyone think there is more going on here than an issue with the RL? Have gas prices, maybe a seriously slowing economy, and in all honesty some disappointment with the new gen (and prices) cars finally caught up with luxo barges? I have a feeling that sales are still fairly robust but is what is going on with the RL going to be spreading? I have to admit, I am a bit surprised that you can already get somewhat healthy discounts on the GS. I know I am disapointed in the new GS and do not plan on replacing my current GSs with the new GS but it is still a Lexus. I am also not in the market for a Volvo S80 T6 but I was surprised at the discounts on it too. And of course you have those dogoned Amerucan cars putting out big hp numbers at low prices, at least relative to most of what we discuss here. So does anyone else think that the luxo brands in general may be in for a rougher time. And of course the silver lining is will those of us who may be able to stick with them be able to get some good deals if we wait a bit? How about that for greedy capitalist pig?

But, once again, what started all this was that bloody salesman and the deal he got on his RL which I now know, thanks to those of you who kept posting, that there are even better deals to be had. Sub $40K? You know I may have to go drive one of those things. I worry about interior room but for that price, I may go for that AWD. It might save a chaining up going over to Tahoe/Reno. ANyone know what the real world mileage is on those things?
I can't say strongly enough, as I did when the RL first came out, that no matter how good it was, it was just not competitive at 50K IMO. And I try to not be too out of touch or terminally stupid realizing what is going on. When a car maker discounts a relatively young model like the RL that strongly, they got something wrong either with the car or the pricing. Before you tell me you can't separate the car from the price, I know that but I figured I would put it in the most widely accepted terms I could.
But I have to say, if that thing has any kind of decent interior room, from what I know about it, there are going to be a lot of V6 luxury sedans sitting on lots for a long time. And for those of you who buy used, you are going to be able to get those in very soon at even more attractive prices. But if I bought one of them when they first came out at 50K, I would be pi**ed.

Well I am surprised its Acura as AlwaysLate has a Hummer H3.. Maybe we should start another Hummer thread for him?

I'm closing this thread because of the downhill trend....
AlwaysLate,
I haven't read this thread at all until just now, and I read it top to bottom.... your comment, while 'mostly' within forum rules definitely come across as agressive and impolite. There are a few areas you have definitely breached
You haven't been on our forum for long, but we try to foster a sense of community and knowledge sharing. The acrid tactic you've taken on this thread is not one that will be long tolerated. There are plenty of ways to state your position without making your replies personal and borderline insulting.
While 1Sick was particpating (and not moderating) the thread, there was absolutely no need to pay him the disrepect you did.
At the end of the day, however, make no mistake that we are a Lexus community. There will be some bias against other brands you should expect... feel free to debate them, but do so politely or a couple of other rules will come into play.

Anyways, enough of that.
Okay, let me present the question of whether the RL is worth $50,000 or not compared to it's closest competitors, the M35x and the GS300X. Seems like many people seem to agree that it's worth the $40,000 that Downey is selling it for but not much more. This is also really annoying cause I've posted this saaaame question several times but it seems like either nobody wants to answer, or they are just too afraid to admit to something. Okay here goes.... Comparably equipped Acura RL's, Infiniti M35x's and Lexus GS300X's all go for AROUND the same price, with the Acura RL being the cheapest. The Acura RL has been said to have better build quality AND materials than the other two. It has more standard horsepower, tied for largest motor, and offers technology that the other two don't, yet still at a cheaper price. Interior size wise, all three cars differ less than an inch in I believe all areas of measurement. Exterior size wise, the RL is the largest of the group. Yada yada, the list goes on. So question is, with this little being said about the RL vs the competition and the RL having the lowest MSRP, could it be said that the Infiniti and Lexus are too not worth much more than $40,000 when fully loaded? If not, I'd like to know the reasoning behind the answer. And PLEASE, do NOT steer even more off-topic than we ALL already have and bring other things into this. I'm just looking for a yes or no answer with an explanation if needed. Not sales numbers and brand prestige or anything of the sort. Anything more will just be pointless and won't be contributing to this discussion. Thanks.
