Totalled the Porsche.

Wow, such a great thing giving him the Porsche and so unfortunate that this should happen but he got to experience a great car for a while and is doing OK which is the most important thing.

OLT that was a nice thing to do for your dad and something he will be thankful for the rest of his life. From those pics the damage does not look that bad but unfortunately parts for 944's are rare and they cost a fortune to fix. If you get to keep it and get it fixed I would shop around for parts and prices as 6220 seems pretty high for the damage and I think you could do better. My neighbor has a red 944 turbo S with the gold wire wheels which is just beautiful. When I got in an accident in my 96 Accord the insurance company totaled it even though it was not that badly damaged. I tried getting them just to repair it and they said they couldn't under Alabama laws and I did not get the car back. I am pretty sure the insurance company makes some money off of many of the cars they total by selling it to repair shops/used car dealers who will fix and sell it to try to make a small profit. Glad your dad is okay and good luck in fixing the 944 or getting another one if that is what you choose to do.

According to the estimate you posted, The repair total was $6220 and insurance was to cover it. It clearly states that at the bottom.....Insurance payment.....$6220. Yet you say that Insurance decided to total the car....not surprising on a car that old. $6220 is probably more than BlueBook. If insurance is totalling the car, why then does the estimate say that insurance will cover the repair bill? The only thing I can assume here is that the estimate was made contingent on what the insurance company WOULD pay if it DID cover the bill....and that that estimate was not an official paper from the insurance company.
If they DO total the car, I have one important suggestion, if it applies to you. Some insurance companies, when they total a car, actually take possession of it themselves....this to prevent the owner from collecting twice on it. (Flip, you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I've actually heard of this...I have a friend who had to battle with an insurance firm....don't remember which one it was...when his 1989 CRX was totalled. They wanted to take posession what was left of the car after he got the settlement check. He said no dice.....kept it and sold it to another friend.....someone who was well-versed mechanicaly and was able to make enough repairs to get it drivable again). So he actually collected twice in it....once when it was totalled and also when he sold it.
Anyhow, in your case, O.L.T., my suggestion is that if you want to keep the car and get it repaired, make sure the insurance company will give you the check and agree to let you keep the car. That way you can hand the settlement check over to the body shop ( which will cover part of the repair ) and then just you (or your dad) come up with the difference out of your pockets.

I'll break down everything though and let you find the answer you were looking for.
1- Got an estimate for insurance on the 13th.
2- adjuster came and totalled it on inspection on the 15th.
3- all parts for the repairs were new parts from Porsche.
4- it will cost me just under $1,000 to put the car back together with parts from PAP Automotive (porsche graveyard in Alabama).
5- insurance agree'd to cover the loan that is currently on the car and told me that i currently had right at $1,000 over the loan left over to play with, but I could have the car back for around that so we all called it even and i kept the car, loan paid off.

If you got $6200 and bought the car back for $850, through all the unpleasantness, you did better than would be expected. Especially, and firstmost, if Dad is OK. There are Porsches under every rock compared to only one Dad. $3800 in parts at Porsche prices is probably not a lot of parts. It might not be able to drive like it once did but you can do a pretty good repair for a lot less than insurance prices.
Or give Foose a call. Seems like a natural for Overhaulin'. Just don't pull any pranks on Dad, he's been through enough. Let them torture you for a week.

It's pretty easy to know when you are part of the party that wrecked it. I was first on the accident scene before the police got there. It's all sheetmetal damage. It isn't like i am buying it from someone who wrecked it and is trying to get rid of it
needs many small parts of the front body structure. He drove it home. (after we crow barred the fender off the tire)

Went by the shop today. Here's the updated pics!
http://www.lextech.org/images/stuff/wreckedpcar/
It doesn't look like $6,200 in damage, but when you get behind the header panel and start looking at the core, you see bad things. Notice the hood went as far back as the windshield and snapped the hinges clean off.
