Default Nissan Announces 2007 Versa Hatchback and Sedan

2007 Nissan versa Hatchback

2007 Nissan Versa Sedan

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.--Sept. 28, 2005--Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today announced the addition of an all-new Nissan Versa hatchback and sedan for the 2007 model year. The new entry-level Versa is expected to have a MSRP starting at around $12,000. The hatchback model is scheduled to go on sale in early summer 2006, with the Versa sedan following in late 2006. The Versa is one of many enhancements to Nissan's 2007 car lineup, which will include an all-new Sentra, all-new Altima and enhanced Maxima.

"Versa rounds out our strong car portfolio, which is going to see a lot of new activity in the coming model year," said Jed Connelly, senior vice president, sales and marketing, NNA, at the Versa preview held at the Nissan Technical Center North America -- Farmington Hills. "Combined with the popular Nissan Sentra, the new Versa gives Nissan a major presence in the under $20,000 sedan segments, which currently account for nearly 1.9 million annual sales."

Versa is an international design, built on Nissan's advanced "B" platform. Versa models sold in North America will be assembled at Nissan's Aguascalientes, Mexico facility, which also builds the current Nissan Sentra.

The name Versa reflects the "versatile space" provided by the roomy interior and cargo area. Versa will be called Tiida in Mexico, Japan, China and other markets where the car is sold.

The design of the new Versa places a priority on interior roominess, a high quality interior and comfortable, stress-free environment.

"The Versa design and engineering teams found a way to put a big interior in a small car," said Connelly. "The interior length, front to back, is over six feet long -- equal to or larger than some full-size luxury sedans." Both the Versa hatchback and Versa sedan also feature large cargo areas, ideal for owners with highly active lives.

Versa offers a high quality interior design and craftsmanship. The interior features a clean, simple design and layout that accentuates its surprising roominess. The Versa exterior features a dynamic look and attention to detail, with the body forms and long rooflines suggesting both the roominess inside and Versa's performance capabilities.

Every Versa comes with a standard 1.8-liter DOHC inline 4-cylinder engine designed to satisfy both performance and environmental requirements. The all-new engine is rated at an estimated 120-horsepower and 125-plus lb-ft of torque (estimated). Fuel economy is estimated at a combined 38 miles per gallon with the available Nissan Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) transmission (final engine performance and fuel economy rating will be finalized closer to vehicle on-sale date).

"With the availability of the smooth, efficient CVT in Versa, we're putting some of our best technology on our entry-level vehicle," said Connelly.

The Versa sedan and hatchback will be offered in several models and with a long list of standard and available features and amenities, including available Intelligent Key, Bluetooth(R) Hands-Free Phone System, satellite radio and Rockford Fosgate-powered subwoofer.

"With its highly affordable price, Versa offers a great opportunity for new buyers to experience Nissan's performance, technology and quality for the first time," said Connelly. "With an expanding consumer market for high quality, highly efficient, high value small vehicles, Versa is in an ideal position for 2007 and beyond."

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. Default All-New 2007 Nissan Versa to Be Built in Mexico;

Aguascalientes Plant Capacity to Increase 70%, Creating Approximately 4,000 Local Jobs

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.--Sept. 28, 2005--Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today announced models of its all-new Nissan Versa hatchback and sedan for North American delivery will be manufactured at its plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico, starting in 2006.

The proven facility, which currently builds the Nissan Sentra for the U.S. market, will expand capacity from 200,000 units today to 350,000 units in 2007, an increase of 70%. Approximately 2,000 direct jobs will be created at the plant, resulting in 2,000 additional jobs among local suppliers.

"We have great confidence in the production efficiency and quality at the Aguascalientes plant," said Dan Gaudette, senior vice president for North American manufacturing and quality assurance at Nissan. "Considering the plant's track record and the significant upgrades that have been recently made, the Versa should have a successful launch."

The 2007 Nissan Versa increases Nissan's participation in the entry-level segment and is expected to have a MSRP starting around $12,000. The name Versa reflects the versatility of the vehicle, offering plenty of room for people and everything they need to support an active lifestyle. Outside the U.S. and Canada, the car will be called Tiida.

The Aguascalientes plant has increased its installed capacity to produce 60 vehicles per hour (one car per minute). With this expanded capacity, Nissan Mexicana will increase its exports to North America from 130,000 units in 2005 to 170,000 in 2006. In the year 2007, the Aguascalientes plant's current exports will double to 290,000 units.

Nissan Mexicana was the base for Nissan's first operation outside Japan when it was established 44 years ago. The Cuernavaca plant started operations in 1966 and production began at the Aguascalientes plant in 1982.

In preparation to meet the North American market's quality requirements, Nissan is investing $800 million through 2006 to bring the latest manufacturing technology to the plant. In addition, the investment will fund Nissan Mexicana's ongoing commitment to production processes that are friendly to the communities and the environment in which their facilities are located. The plant received the Environmental Excellence Award from the Mexican Government in 2004. Plant improvements include:

-- Intelligent multi-model flexible line for assembling bodies of up to four models with eight different versions simultaneously using 353 new-generation robots.

-- Adoption of NIMS (Nissan Integrated Manufacturing System), which makes it possible to assemble a wide range of models in sequence and gives the flexibility to assist Nissan dealers as they receive orders.

-- Automation in the paint line, which was increased with 25 high-efficiency robots for paint transfer as well as the use of technology for low-solvent materials.

-- Integration of suppliers inside the plant's complex to improve the materials supply chain, enabling the delivery of materials in sequence at the assembly point.

-- Adoption of the ICON system, an information system that links the North American region, enabling Nissan Mexicana to speed delivery of Versa orders to customers.

In North America, Nissan's operations include automotive styling, engineering, consumer and corporate financing, sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing. No, I have to disagree....this looks nothing like the Echo. From the side it is more like the Toyota Matrix, Pontiac Vibe, Mazda 3 hatchback, or the upcoming Dodge compact hatchback.

No, my point is not that it looks like an Echo, but just as ugly . . .

And like the Echo, the hatchback version(available in Canada for the Echo) looks better than the sedan version.

Great. We already get shoddy built Nissans and Infiniti's built in America. I guess they figure they can build them better in Mexico.

I dont' think this will do well, Nissans or late are known for more power than competitors and a flashy exterior (ugly or good looking).

This car looks like a design Renault said you can have.

Damn...so what happeend to those sporty concepts they showed at the Auto shows earlier this year?? They forgot about those and gave us this crap?? Is this the ugly Nissan Tida that everyone thought would replace the Sentra?? My god what are they thinking. From a caompany that makes G35 coupes to this monstrosity. I dont know which is the ugliest car on the market now. The Chevy Aveo or this.

Not even close.

The Versa is built on a joint platform between Nissan and Renault. It has nothing in common with the Megane.

It's not a Renault rebadge either.

I have to agree with you guys. This is a pretty ugly car from that side picture, especially the hatchback. Hey but for $12,000 may be it would still sell, since it uses a 1.8L I4 instead of the 1.5 that Scion is using. Here is an obvious power advantage.
