Also keep in mind that BMW lists only the unladen weights for their vehicles on their websites. Curb weight vs. curb weight, the IS250 AT's 3435 lbs actually weighs only 84 lbs more than the 325i AT's 3351 lbs, while the IS250MT's 3455 lbs weighs 170 lbs more than the 325i MT's 3285 lbs.

As far as the horsepower and torque figures go, again, Lexus is now using the new SAE measurement methods for ratings everywhere except for their homeland, while BMW is still using the old method, so a fair comparison can only be made with the numbers obtained from the old method. As I said, Lexus has posted such numbers on their Japanese website, rating the IS250 at 215ps/260Nm, whereas the 325i with the same old method is rated at 218ps/250Nm. The IS250 also has an extremely flat torque curve beginning at 2000rpm, as does the 325i. So engine-wise the IS250 isn't any weaker than the 325i at all.

The 325i review is up:

In the review it mentions SAE net power, so I'm guessing that's the new standard, although I could be wrong.

And just as I thought, there is considerable weight difference between the Bimmer and the Lex. 170 lbs is good for a few tenths of a second performance-wise.

Wrong.

The 325i 6MT gets 20/30 EPA economy.

The IS250 6MT also gets 20/30 EPA economy.

If you want to compare automatics:

325i 6AT gets 21/29 EPA economy,

while the IS250 6AT gets very impressive 24/32 EPA economy.

Just to compare, a Cobalt gets 24/32 EPA economy. Quite embarassing for a "compact" car if you ask me.

So overall, no the BMW 3 Series does not beat the new IS in economy. The manuals tie each other, but with the automatics, the clear win goes to the IS250.

325i 6MT: 20/30
IS250 6MT: 20/29

The IS autos get good mileage, but there is nothing impressive about the mileage of the IS250 6MT. The 325i 6MT has more power, bigger engine, AND better mileage.

SAE net has been called, well, SAE net, for a long long time. People now have to specify if it's the pre-revision SAE net or the post-revision SAE net when they're talking about SAE net power. It's a known fact, however, that as of today, Toyota, Honda and GM remain to be the only manufacturers that have updated the horsepower and torque figures for all their vehicles using the new SAE measurement standards.

For the reasons previously stated, I still believe that the IS250 is just as strong as the 325i engine-wise. Lexus still hasn't released official acceleration times for the manual IS250, nor has the acceleration Gods at C&D tested it, but I'd hereby make this prediction of a high 6 0-60 time for the manual IS250 if C&D ever gets to test it. Knowing that the manual IS250 is geared much more aggressively than the automatics, it only makes sense that it can beat the auto IS250 by at least a full second but is slower than the manual 325i by several ticks due to the weight penalty.
