Default New 3-series convertible to have folding hardtop

BMW's new 3 Series convertible to have folding hardtop, will launch in Europe in '07HARALD HAMPRECHT | Automobilwoche
Posted Date: 10/17/05

MUNICH, Germany -- BMW's successor to the 3 Series convertible will be launched in Europe in March 2007, company insiders say. It will have a folding hardtop.

Officials at BMW of North America declined to say when the convertible will go on sale in that market. But typically BMW launches vehicles in North America three to six months after their European debut.

BMW is expected to introduce the vehicle at the Paris auto show in September 2006.

The convertible will be based on the fifth-generation 3 Series, which was introduced at the Geneva auto show in March. A station wagon variant of the new 3 Series is due in 2006, and an M3 version with a V8 engine arrives in 2008.

German supplier Edscha will supply the roof. Edscha will lease a new construction area at BMW's Regensburg, Germany, plant to produce the three-part roof system.

Edscha supplies the soft-top convertible roof system for the current 3 Series from its plant in Hengersberg, about 50 miles from Regensburg. The first production models of the new 3-Series convertible, known internally as the E93, already have begun.

Edscha supplies roof systems for BMW's current versions of the 6 Series and the Z4 roadster.

Last year, BMW sold 40,300 units of its 3-Series convertible worldwide. In 2002, the niche model's most successful year to date, BMW sold more than 54,000 units of the ragtop.

Great find. Some of us have speculated this was happening. I hope the IS coupe/vert with the trick roof comes as well.

Yes.......that's JUST what we need with BMW's reputation for lousy electronics.....a trick electric roof that gets stuck down ( or half-open ) and jams just as that nice thunderstorm moves in and starts raining cats and dogs.

Hey it keeps things interesting... it's exciting wondering if your $30k interior is going to ruined by water today.

Interesting. Add another choice for hardtop convertibles. I will one day own one (hardtop convertible). I just don't know which yet but options are always welcomed.

That is b/c the 6 is riding its "name" laurels. Avg interior, as big inside as a 3 with a soft roof, not to mention its a flying buttress.

BMW can sell whatever it wants, people will buy it, no matter what it is.

This is true. I'm sure we all remember the 318 from a few years back.

Yes and no, Mike. Even at BMW there are SOME limits. I noticed that very few people have bought the M Coupes. But...talk about a small world. One of those people was my closest auto buddy ( outside of CL ). He bought a red 2000 M Coupe....he actually likes the looks.

Plus it cuts down on the possibility of a leak somwhere down the road. Soft top converts are notorious for EVENTUALLY getting some sort of water leakage. Good deal!

hard to say, hard top has their fair share of potential problems too. more prone to rattle and noise. just as easy for leak along the edges
