Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For me as long as it has power and handling, looks come in second.

Perhaps I can interest you in a mid engine V8 powered Fiero. I will even put a BMW badge on it but that cost $40,000.00 more

Ha ha ha ha. Yeah, the 5, sorry, even in black, its just one ungainly car. The inside has grown on me (its very different) but the quality of chosen materials is lackluster.

But it has the roundel, so it will sell

The car has grown on me dramatically. While I loved the 7 series when it first came out, the 5 took some time for me to like. I would argue about the quality of materials however. As I sat in it, I was reminded how bad the door panels look in cars these days (cheap plastic) - I saw it in the new GS, the new M45 and now the 550.

Bah, its alright I wonder will it grown on me, I really do. I guess since the E34 and E39 were instantly loved, its harder to love this controversy.

I gotta go with Amethy on the 5. I don't care what is under the hood...the new 5 series IMO is still a POS.
But unlike Amethy, I will also pass on the new 6 series,............but will reserve judgement on the new 3-series until I can see it and drive it. Unlike its bigger brothers, However, the new 3-series looks promising. It is even available without I-Drive.

Bimmers always have been drivers cars. They went through a period of being dropdead gorgeous but that is behind them, once again. Went over to the bimmer dealer that is next to the Lexus dealer when my wife's car was in for service and the 550 was a bit of a surprise. Not that the sticker on the one I saw was almost 66K, without tax and license. But that buffy the customer slayer didn't have too much trouble coming down a couple of grand. That was a surprise. Still, 70K for a 5 in my driveway is pretty steep. Too steep for what you get, also IMO.

I was curious as to what other packages and options included in a 550 that added up to 66K so I went to their site and checked it out. I am a performance oriented so I chose these options.

MSRP $57,400
Distination $670

Options & Packages.
Cold Weather Package+ $750
Premium Sound Package+ $1,800
Sport Package+ $2,300
Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG)+ $0
Active Steering+ $1,250
BMW On-Board Navigation System+ $1,800
Rear Seat Heating+ $350
Power Rear Sunshade/Manual Rear Side Window Shades+ $575
4yrs/50K miles maintainance service included.

TOTAL $66,895

Does everyone think the GS430 or the M45 will be able to compete with the 550?

I think once the GS460 comes out it will have a fighting chance against the 550.
