Apparently Detroit News is claiming Lexus is #2 behind BMW this year, 270,000 to 240,000 about...it's mentioned here:

http://autospies.com/article/index.a...&categoryId=21

I added up the chart for Oct BMW and it looks like 255,000 with Mini included...is it fair to include Mini as BMW?

No, mini is not a BMW & not a luxury brand.

If they include mini, then Lexus should include Toyota.

What can you expect from Detroit news ?

Someone should write Detroit News to complain. But I guess, biased as they are, they won't correct this error. I think the autospies article post should have had some corrections, but then again autospies just takes and posts.

I have been looking at the ClubLexus data, sourced from BMW (I assume). That totals to 251,276 with Mini included. BMW alone is 216,063.

Now where DetNews got the Britain Auto Industry Data number of 270,000 is a mystery to me. The site appears to be http://www.eagleaid.com/ but needs subscription.

I was going to post a correction on autospies, but until I have firm numbers I'm hesistant to comment.

Notice according to

Reuters: BMW sales down in October

The total is about 242,000...yet another different number but closer to the ClubLexus number I calculated. EDIT: Reuters is wrong, they used the 2004 figure!!!

According to http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...01/147225.html

The sales are down in October slightly.

Having checked multiple sources, I conclude:

Lexus YTD: 242,060.

Confirmed by the chart on this thread (Autochannel), and matched by Detroit News.

BMW YTD: 216,000

Confirmed by the chart on this thread (Autochannel), and matched by Reuters.

Now:

MINI YTD: 35,213

Confirmed by the chart on this thread (Autochannel).

So if BMW Group is "270,000," as DetNews claims, -35,213 = 234,767. Lower than Lexus.
More accurately based on Autochannel, this thread, Reuters, and elsewhere, BMW = 216,000. Lower than Lexus.

So either way DetNews states it, the sales for BMW itself, without MINI, are less than Lexus.' Hopefully this false claim that BMW is selling higher will be proven wrong by the truth. It is true that WITH MINI, BMW is at 251,000 which is higher. But certainly we can't add the 130,000 Scion has sold YTD! I suppose there's a distinction between Scion being a youth brand, but I don't think MINI is marketed as a BMW...although some are sold at the same places (outlet-like).

I'm thinking of writing to DetNews...they should have mentioned that sales of BMW 'at 270,000' includes that of MINI.

Very late reply, but I'm not sure where you got that figure for Porsche. According to http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...01/147198.html, Oct 2005 sales were 2588.
