Nissan sales down 13.3 percent in October
NOV. 1 1:16 P.M. ET Nissan Motor Co., Japan's second-biggest automaker, on Tuesday said its U.S. auto sales tumbled last month as demand waned for both Nissan- and Infiniti-brand vehicles.
The company sold a total of 72,279 vehicles in October, down from 86,599 units a year earlier. Adjusted for one less selling day in the latest period, overall sales slipped 13.3 percent.
In its Nissan division, monthly volume declined 14.2 percent to 62,317 units, with car sales sliding 15.4 percent and truck demand down 13 percent. Nissan saw weakness across all of its models except the Pathfinder sport-utility vehicle, which gained 58.7 percent to 4,918 units.
Meanwhile, sales of Infiniti cars and trucks slumped 7.3 percent to 9,962 vehicles. A sharp upswing in demand for the M45 -- surging to 2,231 units from 157 the year before -- bolstered a 7.9 percent increase in car volume, while Infiniti truck sales sank 30.5 percent.
So far this year, Nissan has sold 908,205 vehicles, an adjusted gain of 12.5 percent from 813,345 in the prior-year period. Sales of Nissan vehicles are up 13.5 percent, and Infiniti volume has grown 6.3 percent.
Nissan's American depositary shares lost 20 cents to $20.75 on the Nasdaq.

American Honda Reports Fifth Straight Month of Record Sales
Ridgeline Posts Best Month Ever; Strong Sales of Civic, Acura TSX and RL Boost Car Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 1 -- For the fifth consecutive month, total Honda and Acura sales broke records in October, increasing 4.2 percent over last year to 110,895 units, American Honda announced today. Year-to-date sales of Honda and Acura vehicles increased by 6.2 percent to 1,223,812, continuing a record-setting pace and putting the company in line for a 12th straight year of sales increases.
Honda Division also broke records for the fifth consecutive month, with strong sales of the revolutionary Ridgeline pickup and the newly redesigned Civic. Ridgeline posted its best month ever in October, with a record 4,974 units, while Civic continued to make gains, with sales increasing 14 percent over last October.
Increasing consumer awareness of Honda's innovative Ridgeline pickup contributed to its best-ever sales month, while the redesigned 2006 Civic Sedan and Coupe models' combination of exciting styling and thrifty fuel economy resulted in strong consumer interest.
"Strong sales of the Ridgeline and Civic demonstrate Honda's flexibility in a complex marketplace," said Richard Colliver, executive vice president of automobile sales. "The Ridgeline's combination of rugged utility and innovative features, such as the In-Bed Trunk, are clearly a hit with consumers, while record fuel prices make the Civic's excellent 40 miles-per-gallon economy an easy choice."
The Honda Division's year-to-date sales grew 5.7 percent to 1,046,705 units, with Odyssey, Pilot and CR-V all showing year-to-date increases.
Acura Division posted record October sales of the TSX sports sedan and RL performance luxury sedan. TSX sales increased to 2,742, a 52.3 percent increase from last year for a fifth consecutive month of record sales. The RL continued its sales climb to 1,550 units, breaking the old October record of 1,491 units set in 1996, and up 22.9 percent from last year. Year-to-date Acura sales are up 9.3 percent to 177,107.

UPDATE 1-Audi unit outshines poor Oct U.S. car sales at VW

(Adds model mix, details, wraps in Audi results)
FRANKFURT, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Sales of Volkswagen brand vehicles in the United States dropped 21.4 percent to 17,207 units in October due to a weak overall market trend, high fuel prices and a spate of hurricanes that battered the country.
In a statement on Tuesday, the company added that VW brand sales in the first 10 months of the year fell 17.1 percent to 180,200 vehicles despite the relaunch of key models such as the Jetta compact and Passat mid-size sedans.
Passat sedan sales fell 8.3 percent to 4,065 units last month, bringing the year-to-date figure to 28,650 cars, a 34.3 percent decline.
VW said the new Jetta could buck the general trend, after improving sales by nearly 12 percent to 7,500 cars in October. Over the first ten months, Jetta sedan sales have risen 13.3 percent to 79,334 cars.
As fuel prices remain painfully high, demand for fuel-efficient Jetta diesels doubled in recent weeks, the carmaker added.
Sales of Volkswagen's higher-margin Touareg sport utility vehicle (SUV) halved to 1,243 units in October. For the year to date, sales fell 37 percent to 14,375 vehicles.
VW was not the only German carmaker to suffer a steep decline in sales of fuel-thirsty SUVs last month.
German premium carmaker BMW (BMWG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a 40 percent drop in deliveries of its offroaders like the X5, while Porsche (PSHG_p.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) reported sales of its Cayenne SUV plunged 45 percent in October.
AUDI EXCELS
Volkswagen's premium brand Audi bucked an overall poor sales month for the U.S. auto industry, reporting its second-best October on record after deliveries rose 9.4 percent to 6,659 cars.
"Audi sales have again been extremely good after last month's best September sales ever, despite a heavily declining market and significantly reduced incentives," Audi of America chief Johan de Nysschen said in a statement, citing the nameplate's youngest model line-up of all premium brands.
October's increase however was due almost solely to the popularity of its A6 sedan and all-new A6 Avant estate. Combined, Audi's full-size model enjoyed nearly a 159 percent gain in sales to 1,382 units.
Year-on-year, Audi's best-selling mid-size model line -- consisting of the A4 sedan, estate, convertible and high-performance S4 version -- was the only other line able to keep deliveries from falling. They remained stable at 4,069 units.
The TT roadster, Audi Allroad, and the A8 executive sedan all suffered significant double-digit percentage declines.
In the first 10 months of 2005, the carmaker improved overall U.S. Audi brand sales by 4.6 percent to 66,315 units.
The company also sold 4,053 units of its new A3 five-door Sportback compact since its launch in May, of which 631 left dealerships in October.
Audi will launch its first SUV, the full-sized Q7, in May next year.

LS430 down -39.4%!!
No wonder the execs at Lexus USA were mad at Toyota's decision to unveil the LF-Sh at the Tokyo show, a year or more before the new LS goes on sale. The following 12 months or so will suck for the current LS.
Given the number of selling days of the new IS, it seems to be well on track to making the 40,000-unit first-year sales target.
I wish they could've listed the IS250's and IS350's separately as they did for the GS though. Perhaps they will in the next month when the IS300's are sold no more.
The 3-Series still rules the entry luxury sport segment. The new IS even if it meets the 40,000 sales target it'll just be barely beating *half* the sales volume of the new 3. Simply amazing.

* Ford Motor Company's U.S. sales totaled 199,847 in October, down 26 percent compared with a year ago. * Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr arrive in dealer showrooms - and quickly depart. * Land Rover's record sales (up 40 percent) paced by new LR3 and Range Rover Sport.
DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 1 -- U.S. consumers purchased 199,847 new vehicles from Ford , Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo dealers in October, down 26 percent compared with a year ago. Most models experienced sharp declines in October in the wake of this summer's strong sales.
Both car and truck sales were lower than a year ago, but cars fared better than trucks owing to contributions from new products. In October, all-new mid-size sedans arrived in dealer showrooms. Sales for the Ford Fusion (4,078), Mercury Milan (1,336), and Lincoln Zephyr (1,204) easily exceeded Ford's expectations.
"The Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr were notable exceptions to an otherwise slow month," said Steve Lyons, Ford group vice president, North America Marketing, Sales and Service. "Many Ford dealers likened the consumer response to Fusion as on par with the reception of the Ford Mustang a year ago."
The new Ford Mustang continued to post higher sales (up 22 percent) and the Ford Five Hundred and Mercury Montego full-size sedans, which also were introduced last October, registered higher sales than a year ago.
Land Rover dealers reported record October sales (up 40 percent) on the strength of its two new models -- the LR3 and Range Rover Sport.

Kia Motors America Announces October 2005 Sales
Sportage and All-New Rio Are Strong Performers; Year-to-Date Sales Up 4.6%
IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 1 -- Kia Motors America (KMA) remains on pace to set another annual sales record in 2005, despite October unit sales that were below the same month in 2004. Year-to-date sales of 236,993 are up 4.6-percent, while October sales totaled 20,631 versus 22,973 units sold during the same period in 2004.
Kia's next generation products continue to perform well, including the all-new Sportage compact SUV and the Amanti premium sedan, which recently were awarded Kia's first J.D.
