Question Engine trumpet things

I don't know the name of the part. I tried searching alot of things but came up with nothing. It's like when a car has the hood cut away and there are 6 to 12 (depending on the number of cylinders) trumpet things sticking out. Does anyone know what they are called and what the deal with them is? Thanks!

EDIT: Well wadda ya know, I guess the new Lexus V-10 has something like them

the trumpetlike things themselves are called Velocity Stacks and they are usually paired with ITB (Individual Throttle Bodies). the result from this is an increase in engine Response.

apparently there's a science of designing these velocity stacks as well...how long they are how much they're open the curvature of the trumpet opening all plays a critical part in how air enters the motor

having them all independent and all with the exact same length and shape also helps (same with headers i think). that's why the m5 engine is such an art, even the older e39 they had itb already. it gives out max power

all those elements work together to create the velocity of air

... plus it makes the engine sound wicked-awesome!
