Where does "whip" come from?

Not sure if it's just a city thing but we use it here all the time. Never ran across someone who didn't know what I was referring to.

i come across lots of ppl out of town that have no idea what im talking about **** my wife asked me what i was talking about a couple of months ago

I'm from Boston, I don't hear whips use very often. We usually say "ride." Or just plain "car."

i was born and raised in harlem and I recall whip being thrown around in the early 90's. I recall it coming from driving their cars or whipping the car around the hood hence "the whip".. because alot of "entrepreneurs" moving those "things" who had new cars just drove around the hood just trying to shine and let other people know how much cashflo they had.
