Where does "whip" come from?

Whats the deal with calling cars "whips"? Where did that come from?

I'm almost positive that term originated from the lingo spoken in NYC, but I'm sure some of our NY natives will chime in.

i heard that it comes from the term whipping round town...i unno i say it sometimes joking around

I got it off a Jay-Z cd... so NYC seems to be the origin!

Its East Coast, my friend from Conneticut says the same thing. When he asked me to check out his new whip I had no idea what he was talking about. He also calls sub shops "grinders".

Almost as bad as calling Soda "POP" like my family from the MidWest.

i think he meant ICE as in diamonds, if not i stand corrected. i dont know where the term whip actually derived from but ive been hearing and using it since the 80s
