Mercedes, IMO, is good only for HP / torque ( too much in some models ) and crash safety.
BMW offers a first-rate chassis and steering feel.

Other than that, I see little or no reason to buy either make. Neither make, IMO, offers well-built products any more, and both are overly-complex electronically.

I personally think, for those who want a German-engineered product, Audi today is the way to go, especially with the AWD Quattro-equipped models....though Audi does share some of the poor-quality German electronics and the frustrating MMI.

I personally think Benz didn't start making good looking cars until the late 90's (with the exception of the SL). I always prefer the styling of the pre-2000 BMW models over most pre-2000 Benz models( I'm referring to the 80's & 90's models not those before) . . . that's why styling is always subjective.
