I don’t know, but I see an M3 to be VERY differentiated from a regular 3 series, while a C class aren’t very different from their AMG cousins. Now more then ever since they put the sport package on almost every C class.
Plus I like the M3’s interior much more.

M3 SMG.
You should also look at the CLK55 (first made in '01). 5.5 engine, V12 tranny, great brakes, and a solid car all around. Produced at the end of the 1st gen CLK's life cycle, most of the model line's bugs had already been worked out. I prefer the NA 5.5's power and low end torque over the supercharged C32. This car will walk away from the M3 from a standing start, and will smoke it in roll on acceleration. Ring times are great for reference, but in real world driving, you know how the saying goes - no replacement for displacement.
However, the M3 has more communicative steering and just feels sharper all around. The SMG is a blast also. I'd take the M3 SMG over either the CLK or C, but the CLK55 is a very close second. The C32 is a nice car also, but I rank it third out of these three.
FWIW, I've driven all of these cars extensively. I suggest you do the same before you choose.
Good luck!
