Interesting that there was speculation that the internal combustion engine would be obsolete in 50 years!

TULSA, Okla. - A Plymouth Belvedere that was buried in a concrete vault nearly 50 years ago as part of the state's golden anniversary celebration will be unearthed in 2007 as part of the Oklahoma centennial festivities.

The 1957 Belvedere is underground next to the Tulsa County Courthouse. Also buried with it were five gallons of gas and a case of beer.

Old news reports indicate the gas was buried in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007 and no fuel was available.

to think thatthe gas would even be Stable after 50 years much less that it would work in a car thats been sitting there just as long is doubtful.

Cool.........so were gonna have a deteriorated '57 plymouth to dig up.

lets see......
gaskets, tires, ......clean the carb. (throw out the gas in the can)

Fifty years ago, a gold-and-white Plymouth Belvedere was buried in a time capsule in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Now comes the time to unearth it, as part of Oklahoma state centennial festivities.


These little girls from 1957 will be toting their AARP membership cards to the unveiling of the Belvedere.


The year 2007 must have looked very far off to the city fathers of 50 years ago — enough so that they buried gasoline and oil with the Belvedere, in case those fuels were no longer being used. They may only have been off by a few decades.


What better way to celebrate a centennial than with a rolling piece of Americana like the Plymouth Belvedere?

TULSA, Okla. — This Friday, the centennial of Oklahoma statehood will be feted by the ceremonious raising of a rolling time capsule in Tulsa: a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere, buried 50 years ago under the city courthouse lawn in a crypt. The bad news: As workers began to unearth the plastic-wrapped two-door hardtop, they discovered the crypt is partly filled with water and the Plymouth may well be damaged.

Organizers of the annual Tulsarama! festival reportedly were seen crying over the unexpected setback, although the NewsOK.com Web site quoted 58-year-old Tulsan Steve Walter, who had watched the car buried as an 8-year-old, taking a more philosophical approach: "Fifty years ago I was younger and a little healthier, too. Now, I'm a rust bucket also."

Items buried with the Belvedere include "the contents of a woman's purse" of 1957, consisting of bobby pins, cigarettes, an unpaid parking ticket — and a bottle of tranquilizers — which were packed away inside the Belvedere's glove compartment. Ten gallons of gasoline and 5 quarts of motor oil were also buried in the crypt in case automobiles were no longer using those fuel sources by 2007.

Back in 1957, citizens were asked to guess what the population of Tulsa would be in 2007. The entries were sealed inside the vault. Assuming they have not been ruined by the water, the closest guess will be identified at the car's unveiling and the entrant, or his or her heirs, will be given the '57 Plymouth as the reward.

All tickets, priced at $5 and $10, are sold out for the car's public unveiling, which will take place far from the watery crypt inside the Tulsa Convention Center.

What this means to you: Rust or no rust, this kind of milestone looks OK to us.

My elementary school in Miami forgot all about a time capsule they buried and a few of us alumni approached the principal. However, with a car this beautiful glad they know where it is and when to open it.
