Default 00-01 M5

Any problems with the 00-01 M5. I really like the design and have seen some for really great prices since the new gen M5 came out. Just wondering if there were any major or persistant problems that people knew of? I think this car would look really great with some iForged or DPE wheels and a few other minor mods.

They are just like any other bmw product as far as reliability goes. Not terrible, but dont expect them to be like a lexus. They more than make up for their shortcomings by the joy they provide when driving. The 2000-2001 m5 is my dream car, 400hp beasts that can handle and outperform most every 4 door you will ever come across. They sound spectacular and the owners usually have nothing to say but positive things. If you could find one that was nice at a decent price I would more than recommend you to ****** it up....especially if you get the turquoise blue color.

my friend has one and when we were looking at getting one preowned...he told me to keep an eye out on the intake vanos? as those do bad with age and the price of replacement is hefty.

I've browse on the M5 forums for fun from time to time, and from what i remember, there are somtimes VANOS issues, Nav problems, and clutch problems. However, none of those seem to be issues that every or even majority of the owners are having, just some of the more commonly seen ones. However, I talked my brother out of buying a used M5... because if you don't know how its been treated and for some reason would need a new engine down the road (like my neighbors 2001 M5 did.... he was cruising in 6th gear at 70mph on the freeway when the engine when BOOM... he meticulously maintained it too) its about $18,000 plus labor for a new motor.

The E39 M5 is a totally bad-*** car. It just so happens that two good friends of mine both own one. One of them owns a 2000 LeMans blue and the other owns a 2001 in carbon black. So far they haven't really had any real issues.

A few pics

Here's the 2000 in LeMans blue

And here's the 2001 in Carbon Black

It is the ultimate driving machine... I would get one myself. As far as electrical problems go, every car has random problems, even Lexus. Just take a look at the plethora of problems for our cars. Just get the M5 and rip her

yeah some older 3 and 5 series got some problems (and the 7 series was nothing but problems in the beginning), but i think the e39 m5 and the e46 m3 were two top of the line bmw that have very few problems. they made the cars right imho
