STUTTGART, Germany — Porsche is ending production of its high-performance Carrera GT in April, after a brief but well-received run of less than three years.
The company said it delivered its 1,111th Carrera GT in late December to a lucky customer in the United Arab Emirates, making it "the most successful high-performance sports car of all time" — whatever that means.
We can tell you this much: The Carrera GT was first unveiled in September 2000 at the Louvre in Paris and went into production three years later, in September 2003. Since then, more than half of the cars produced have been delivered to customers in North America, where the car retailed officially for $440,000.
Performance is prodigious. A 5.7-liter DOHC V10 delivers 605 horsepower (in U.S. trim) to the rear wheels through a six-speed gearbox. Zero-to-60-mph acceleration is achieved in less than 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 205 miles per hour.
At the start of the car's short life span, Porsche said it intended to produce only 1,500 copies.
What this means to you: Say good-bye to a young friend.

However, they delivered the last unit, #1111.... while they planned to procude 1500. Something tells me while the performance was prodigious, demand was just slightly short of prodigious. There are A LOT of options out there these days when you're shopping for an ultra-performer. Heck, you have a $65,000 Z06. a $120,000 Ford GT, or a $180,000 F430 that probably come fairly close in performance to this.

I think I posted a thread awhile back stating that they were to decrease production this year. It is a limited edition model but compared to other competitors, Enzo for example, it really wasnt that limited. One of the finest Porsches to date. Hopefully they can up the ante with a new generation model.
EDIT: Heres the post and the reason why they are discontinuing the CGT...

Porsche won't bring in the final 200-plus Carrera GT supercars planned for the United States - and, surprisingly, dealers couldn't be happier.
"I'm thrilled," says Jerry Nelson, owner of Schneider + Nelson Porsche in West Long Branch, N.J. "From the beginning I thought there were too many being built."
Porsche says the $440,000 car won't meet 2006-model requirements for smart airbags, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wouldn't grant a waiver.
"It's a business decision," a Porsche spokesman says. "The cost of engineering the two-stage airbags and recrashing the cars just to make them model-year 2006 cars just doesn't make sense."
Porsche is cutting total output of Carrera GTs to 1,250 units, from 1,500. Most of the 250 dropped units would have gone to the United States, the spokesman says. Since the Carrera GT went into production in January 2004, 396 have been sold in the United States through July.
Dealers say keeping the numbers down will help keep values high.
Nelson says Porsche initially told dealers it would build only 1,000 and charge $399,000. "We let that word get out to our customers, but then the number went up to 1,500 and $440,000," he says.
Many prospects view the car "as an investment," Nelson says, and asked why Porsche was building so many Carrera GTs, when Ferrari usually only makes 400 or so when it has a limited-edition car.

Sad to see it go, but they have to protect their investments. They are about to make the CGT one of the most high priced and sought after sports car for the ultra wealthy a few years down the road.

Now for Porcshe. Sorry but they are full of crap on this one. It was reported (I think we even had a thread here) that sales just stalled and they were not going to hit the 1500 GOAL. So instead they make a public announcement saying they are limiting production.
Sorry but its B.S. And for it being the most successful, by what? Lamborghini sold over 3,000 Diablos (though in 10 plus years).
With that said, when I saw my first CGT at the Atlanta Auto SHow 2 years ago, I was just MESMORIZED. Its just beautiful, a work of art.
