Chevrolet Camaro Concept - Test drive & renderings (Update - Video)
#31
Daimler-Chrysler has been pretty amazing - actually bringing their concepts to market in a relatively short time frame. They've learned that once you start the buzz, you'd better produce - otherwise you lose that initial flurry of interest. GM's revival of the Camaro will look old by the time it gets to market.
What's with testing a chassis mule? Ok, it's self-propelled, that's about all we learn. Hope the product engineers know more than that. Like maybe how to squeeze some headroom out of that body mockup.
I can't get excited about a few drawings either. When was the last concept drawing translated into steel intact? Unless you are addressing the munchkin market, that roofline's going up, or the pan's going down - and/or the driver will adopt the F-16 driving position. Also, with the cost of gas - any bets on that 6-71 blower making it to the options list? That Terminator shifter may work - if we've perfected time travel by the roll-out date it should fit five steely fingers just fine.

The renderings look very, very good and American. Something you don't have enough of. I'm not
a muscle car guy, but this car definitely gets my attention. Chevy should have spent R&D on this
than the HHR and the convertible truck thingy. It must suck for them to sit by and see Ford have
such a huge hit on their lots with the Mustang.
Let's see if they can get this car to the public before gas prices hit $5/gallon.

Camaro Convertible already approved?

Haven't gotten the latest issue of Motor Trend in the mail yet, but THIS ARTICLE FROM post-gazette,com references the current July issue out on newsstands that claims General Motors has already approved a convertible Camaro for production. Umm... now we all know the Camaro Concept (and the Dodge Challenger Concept, as well) will likely go into production, but last we heard the business case was "still being fleshed out". Reportedly 100,000 Camaros will need to be sold in order for Chevy to start profiting from the Camaro's return. A convertible model would no doubt help the cause, so we're not surprised it's on the table. Indeed, debuting a Camaro Convertible Concept in the intervening years before the actual coupe goes on sale will keep the car's buzz at a fevered pitch until production starts sometime in 2008 or 2009.

How is GM going to keep the Camaro from interfering w/ Corvette sales?
I know this model is just a concept at the moment, but I think Chevy needs to give serious thought to what exactly this car should be and where the Corvette is going in the future before they commit to building it.
It already looks to me, with its newer and more advanced chassis/suspension setup, like this car could easily give the 'Vette a run for its money. Maybe Chevy could just move the Vette up and drop the Z06 trim (that is standardize it).

well corvette should still corner better
it is a 2 seater
camaro is a 2+2 from the looks of it
but yeah i agree with you, if they are not stubborn enough, they would up the corvettes to Z06 standards and make the car a more rare exotic
and produce more Z06 so price can drop down a bit more to be even more competitive
and keep the camaro a bit lower end than corvette
but considering corvette has always been doing well for chevrolet, they might want to keep the basic trim so the masses can still get them

Seriously, just about every good concept car they've ever made has never seen production.
If GM cares about survival, they wouldn't take half a decade to develop a model. This should've
been developed as is and put out as a 2007 model. Chrysler would've done it.
That's why it suprises me to see the Solstice and Sky in existence (although the development still took too long).

($22k to $32K about). The Corvette is about $45K and up. There shouldn't be any cross shopping.

http://www.camaro5.com has a few videos of the Chevy Camaro Concept. They need to floor this thing and give us some burnouts
