Thumbs up In-depth look at Toyota's new GR-series engines

The following link contains some very interesting information on the new GR-series engines(IS, GS, Avalon, Rav4, Toyota Trucks and soon to be Camry, RX, and ES). Its a PDF file, so you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The link also includes detailed information on Ford's new 3.5L V6 to be used on in the 500, Fusion, and Edge, Volkswagons TwinCharger engine, GM's LZ9 OHV V6(Pontiac G6 GTP) and BMW M5's V10 engine. ENJOY!!!

Yep, another reason to believe it'll achieve close to the maximum power of 275kW (369hp) in its power meter reading, since its gas motor alone provides 300+hp.

How do you know it's not de-tuned like the gasoline engine on the RX400h(compared to that on the RX330) ? I'm not saying it will be, I hope not . . .

The 3.3L was detuned because it wasn't clean enough an engine (ULEV-I, as opposed to 2GR-FSE's ULEV-II) to begin with. One of the goals of Toyota's hybrid vehicles is to be as clean as possible and that was why they had to detune the 3.3L a bit in the hybrid. Since the new 3.5L is clean enough for a gas motor, I believe the case to detune it is much weaker here for the GS450h. Of course, this is all my pure speculation, though I try to make as much sense as possible.

it will be slightly detuned - but not mechanically, I would think ECU will be changed for better consumption and emissions. RX400h's 3.3 engine has been detuned, VVTi removed, etc, etc.

GS450h will have VVTi and dual injection according to the article. I wouldnt expect HSD to be much different, maybe only slightly more improved than RX400h (more batteries, higher battery output, etc).

But for anyone that has driven an RX400h, imagine it 300lbs lighter, with 80hp more and better aerodynamics.... that should be nice!

Awesome article! That BMW V10 in particular is just amazing. Anyone else see those gorgeous stainless headers?

While Ford is still playing catch-up in many ways, I still think they've got a better chance than GM of staving off bankruptcy (besides their slightly better financial situation) because they seem to be working REALLY hard in the product area where it really counts. Moving to the 6 speed auto all over, this new engine, better body shapes, trying to rejuvenate Mercury and Lincoln, MAJOR strides in making their vehicles QUIETER and with better interiors.

I would have agreed with you until GM came out with this little gem of an engine:
http://media.gm.com/us/gm/en/news/ev...tiac_Oview.htm

27MPG Highway Turbo engine that runs on 87 octane. Direct Injection. Twin scroll turbo.

The gas mileage of 20/27 isn't all that impressive for a 4-banger on a car with a curb weight of less than 3,000 lbs. Premium fuel is also recommended though not required. Other than that, this is indeed something worth cheering for GM about.

actually, mpg is pretty bad. IS350 while 500lbs heaveir and 50hp more powerful, gets 1 mpg more.
Thats with 4cly engine... again, pretty bad.
