Porsche Planning Successor to the 914
Porsche, the increasingly hyperactive sports car manufacturer may be planning another model.
As well as the four-door Panamera, already confirmed, Porsche is said by an American magazine, Road & Track, to be working on a new smaller sports car. It will be in co-operation with VW - a Porsche chassis with a VW 2.0 engine of around 220 bhp. If Porsche wanted to go ahead, VW could not refuse - Porsche now owns nearly 20% of VW and has seats on the board.
It would take Porsche back to its roots - sports cars based on tuned VW engines. However, Porsche will be well aware that the last VW co-operation, the 1.7 and 2.0 Porsche 914 of the early seventies, was one of the company's few sales failures.

Porsche considering ‘elemental’ roadster?
Porsche may be planning a successor to the 914, according to Road and Track. Described as an “elemental” roadster, the car would be based on the Boxster platform, only lighter, smaller and cheaper. The Spartan interior, plus light alloy and carbon-fiber materials throughout the chassis and body would keep overall weight to just 2650 lb. Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder TFSI engine — tuned to 230 bhp — would provide plenty of thrills while keeping performance below that of the Boxster. The full images can be seen in the February issue of Road and Track, on newsstands now. Reality or fantasy? Only time will tell…

That drawing honestly looks more like an Opel product than a Porsche one.
Probably not a good idea to build this one. Porsche is finally hitting it big after never really being one of the bigger dogs, so why would you bring back one of your failures? That's like Ford bringing back the Pinto, or the Yugo factory reopening

I think a modern 944 would be a better idea if they want a more affordable model and it should be a front engined coupe/hatchback not just a rear/mid engine 2 seater or 2+2 as they have the boxster, cayman, Carrera GT, and 911 sharing that layout. A large 4 cylinder putting out 260hp in a car weighing around 2900lbs priced around 37-40K would be a nice option for people who want a Porsche but can't afford a 911 and need rear seats and trunk space so a boxster/cayman is out of the question.

I have been interested in my neighbor's old 914 (rarer than my RX300 here) so maybe by passing along the information maybe he might be interested in selling.

it would be a huge mistake, it would be like BMW selling the 1 series here (or when they sold the 318 ), or when mercedes had that messed up little 4 cylinder coupe thing starting at 25k. It poisons the high class name to sell a low class affordable car. And yes 1sicklex, a used 911 costs anywhere from 35k-45k right now only a few years old, a much better solution to an affordable porsche.
