Default Detroit 2008: The Heart of the King, the LS9 is born !

Detroit 2008: The Heart of the King, the LS9 is born !

Posted Dec 19th 2007 8:18PM

Every great king needs a great heart. Given the competition out there, if a car intends to claim the mantle of "King of the Hill", it better have a mighty heart. We haven't driven the new Corvette ZR1 yet, but based on what we know so far of its heart, it can surely make a plausible claim to the throne. Beating in the engine compartment of every ZR1 will be the most powerful series production edition of the Chevrolet small block V-8 ever created.

While the new LS9 shares the important dimensional characteristics that define the small block, that being the 4.4-inch bore spacing and the cam-shaft embedded in the valley between the two banks of four cylinders, it is in essence a new engine. With a minimum output of 100 hp/L and forced induction, this machine can climb to some serious altitude. Read on to learn all about what makes the LS9 so special.

Verdict: False
Word is that the blown engine is too strong for any of GM’s manuals, so the uber Corvette will only come in automatic. It’s a reversal of precedent—the automatic transmission proves stronger here than the manual.

Because then their performance would stink compared to other sport manufacturers b/c of the added weight, and they'd cost way more. Plus, domestic foray into luxury has not been particularly successful.

It can be fun, but we're long past the point where the power can be useful on even semi-public roads, much less public roads. The recent accomplishment in Corvette performance (on and off the track) has been due to a complete restructuring of the car to have lower weight and provide better weight balance, not an increase of horsepower. I liked that, but with the 7L Z06 and now this ZR1 we're heading straight back to bigger and bigger engines. Anyone can put a bigger engine in a car to make it go faster.

It won't last long. Another huge cut much like the one in the early 70s that saw the death of the muscle/pony-car wars will end these wars for the most part. I dont think the cars will be banned; but there will be a hefty tax placed on them for not conforming to the rules; though I could be wrong.

That color, those wheels. Very nice! Now paint over the clear plexiglass hood window and it would be complete. to GM!
