Yes, I totally blanked about the car washing thing. And I do mean blanked as I had so much experience from working at dealerships with automated car washes. Doh.

You guys can pretty much guess how MY car gets cleaned...I don't have to tell you.
The secret to a good hand wash, whether you use plain water or a wash-solution ( do NOT use dishwashing detergent
) is to first wet the whole car with the hose, get inside the wheel-wells and the inside ledges, and (crucially important ) get ALL the sand off after a snow....this may take time and a lot of water. The sand can hide in a million places. Then, with a clean sponge or rag, do one section at a time...start with the roof. KEEP the whole car wet until it is time to dry it...do NOT allow any one section to dry after washing. You will have to keep lightly spraying the whole car to keep it wet until you are done washing. Then when the whole car is clean and still wet, then dry it with a couple of SOFT clean towels. Genearch seems to have no trouble with waterspots and air-drying, but I have found by experience that the above procedure works best for getting the car clean, dry, and avoiding waterspots.
After the car is dry on the outside, you can usually wipe the inside windows clean with just a slightly damp towel...usually you don't need ammonia or vinegar unless they are REALLY dirty.
Some people say you shouldn't use a sponge ( it scratches ). I disagree...I've used one for years and have had no trouble. They do wear though, and fall apart fairly quickly...you have to keep buying new ones.
For emergencies on the road in-between washes....say if a bird or slop from the road gets you, and you want to get it off quickly before the paint suffers, I keep a large, well-sealed bottle of water in the trunk and a sponge that I can take out anywhere and anytime the temperature is above freezing and wet the sponge and the dirty area and do an emergency spot-clean. I also keep my recommended SCRATCH-OUT and soft towels and rags with me at all times.

I wash my car myself - would never let anyone touch it. I guess I would let some CL members wash it for me - but I doubt that is ever going to happen!!Jonny

I'm the only one who washes my cars. When I go to the dealer I make sure they write it on the service ticket "NO WASH" and I leave a sign in my car that says the same thing in English AND Spanish.
