The New GS went on sale on 2/15 last year I believe, so it did not exactly do better this month despite the "growth" in the monthly sales number.

And Lexus knows exactly when the cars will be in the dealers in volume. To some people it won't make a lot of difference but the last thing Lexus wants is a lot of the previous versions at the dealers when the upgunned versions arrive. There will probably be very minor pricing differences but the difference in the engines is, as we all know, significant. Lexus knows that some proportion, maybe a big proportion, of the outgoing engined models will need official or unofficial discounts to get rid of. I am sure a lot of us feel that the third gen 430 was just not worth the bother over a second gen 400/430 but people are going to be faced at the least with a 3K increase for 0 -60 in the mid to low 5 second range and mileage in the mid to high 20s in the 450h or the 380hp 460. Sales for the third gen GS haven't been bad but they are finally going to get the motors they should have had from the start. According to this months CAR, the LS460 is going to get mid 20s in the pure petro version. Imperial gallon is a bit bigger than ours but it sounds like the GS460 will have 80hp on mine and probably get three or four mpg better mileage. As for taking sales from the 5, it just simply wasn't competitive. The dyno engines are competitive with the 5 (finally) while bimmer has absolutely nothing to compete with the hybrid in RX, GS, LS, or ES. The GS3 has always outsold the GS4 and the difference there is even greater. I would assume that Lexus has shifted production to the new LS as well, or is about to, and I wouldn't want to have a bunch of the outgoing ones on the floor when the new LS arrives. Sales numbers may get a bit whacky here for a while until this all shakes out.

I'm sorry, but the GS460/350 are not due out till this fall. I don't believe for one minute that Lexus started reducing production last November/December in anticipation of this. We can have this discussion in the April/May/June timeframe and it might have more credibility.

Lexus MIGHT however be reducing production simply because the cars are not selling like they used to. Honda is doing this with their Pilot -but this is an old platform, not a new platform and people are ready for a redo of that vehicle.

I think we can all agree that they should not have waited to bring out the new engines. It does sound like they are incredible however.

Good things happen to those who wait, LOL.

Sounds like the GS 350 in particular may be an excellent choice.

It does seem plausible to me that Lexus would not want a glut of GS 300s and GS 430s; others on this board have predicted the resale value of those cars may plummet with the GS 350 and 460...whether they would reduce production early in the year, I have no idea.

BMW Group's 2006 Year-to-Date Sales Are on the Rise
BMW brand, Certified Pre-Owned post impressive sales increases in February

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., March 1 -- The BMW Group (BMW and MINI brands combined) reported sales of 22,018 vehicles in February 2006, an increase of 2.4 percent over the 21,496 vehicles sold in the same month of 2005. Year-to-date, BMW Group sales increased 7.2 percent, to 44,236 vehicles versus the 41,260 sold in the first two months of 2005.

BMW Brand Sales

BMW reported sales of 19,328 automobiles and Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV), up 5.3 percent compared to the 18,356 vehicles reported in February 2005. Year-to-date, BMW reported sales of 38,602 vehicles compared to the 35,203 reported in the same period a year ago, an increase of 9.7 percent.

BMW Automobile Sales

BMW's monthly automobile sales increased 16 percent for the month, due in part to strong 3 Series and 7 Series sales, at 15,463 versus 13,341 in February 2005. For the first two months combined, BMW automobile sales increased 19 percent to 30,918 versus 25,952 reported in the same period last year.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicle Sales

February sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles were down 23 percent, to 3,865 vehicles over the 5,015 reported in the same month a year ago. Year-to- date, sales decreased to 7,684 vehicles from 9,251 in 2005, down 17 percent.

Certified Pre-Owned

BMW's Certified Pre-Owned sales increased 14.7 percent in February -- making it the best February on record for BMW CPO sales -- to 6,364 vehicles over the 5,546 reported in February 2005. Year-to-date, CPO sales grew to 12,125 vehicles over the 10,291 reported in the same period in 2005 for an increase of nearly 18 percent.

MINI Brand
MINI Automobiles
MINI USA reported February sales of 2,690, a decrease of 14 percent compared to the 3,140 sold in February 2005. MINI USA also reported sales of 5,634 for the first two months of 2006, a decrease of 7 percent over the 6,057 sold in the same period a year ago. Production at MINI's Oxford, England plant was halted for an extended period in December and January for expansion- related upgrades, resulting in lower inventories, which contributed to the lower MINI sales figures in the U.S.

Default Mazda Reports Double-Digit Sales Increase in February 2006

- Strong Sales From MAZDA3 and MAZDA6 Lead to 13.0 Percent Increase -

IRVINE, Calif., March 1, 2006; Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today reported sales of 23,580 vehicles in February -- a 13.0 percent increase versus the same period last year.

Mazda's strong February was led by impressive sales of its popular MAZDA3 and sporty MAZDA6. MAZDA3 reported sales of 7,536 units, accounting for a 7.0 percent increase versus last year, while MAZDA6 jumped 12.0 percent to 6,818 units sold.

The versatile MPV also saw an increase in sales as it posted sales of 1,546 units, accounting for a 3.0 percent gain over last year. MAZDA5 continues to be a strong seller as it posted sales of 2,138 units while the MX-5 Miata posted sales of 1,295 units.

"The fact that the majority of our vehicles saw an increase in sales over last February proves that the Mazda lineup appeals to a wide range of customers," said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "One thing all Mazda vehicles have in common is they each contain the soul of a sports car. From the MAZDA3 to the MX-5 Miata to the MPV, each vehicle offers a different driving experience yet is still fun to drive."

Mazda North American Operations is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and services support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., MNAO has more than 700 dealerships nationwide.

Question Rx-8

Down 50% -- anyone know what the deal is?

My brother bought one altho I advised him not to; I know they had to take out his entire air conditioning unit & since then I have never asked him about it again.

It is not a very practical car but I think that it looks nice -- ponder why it is not selling ...

Been like that for a while now - just like any sports car, hot the first two years and then poof. A guy here at work has one - LOVES IT! Had some computer issues in the beginning (rough idle) - they sent a new computer from Japan and he has been problem free since.

Of note, I've never driven a car that handles like the RX-8 - so balanced.

I'm not sorry Doug. I am not sure when the new upgunned cars will show up, either 350 or 460 but lets say its six months from now. In Feb, the sales of GS3s was 1771 vehicles while 278 GS4s. Not sure whether this is US or North America but a six month supply would be ten thousand GS3s and 1500 GS4s for all of North America or the US. Of course the question is how many GSs are in dealer hands or the pipeline right now. I'll bet they don't want too many more out there than are there right now. After all you are only talking about an average of 200 GS3s per state and 30 GS4s in inventory right now being a six month supply. In fact, with these sales of a very new model, I think the argument raised that no one knows there are new motors coming doesn't seem to make sense. I think Lexus biggest problem is actually releasing as much information as they are. It really looks like they have a grim six months on their hands. If they do nothing for three months, they will be down to only needing 5,000 GS3s and 750 GS4s to make it to the new engines and I just can't believe they want to wait that long. They may already have too many cars out there for the next six months and if I went in to buy one, I would sure want to extract a heck of a deal because when those new engines arrive, the hit on depreciation on the old engine models will be steep. I wonder if anyone can get a handle on how many GSs are actually out there but to tell you the truth, with these current sales, I don't think they need to deliver any cars with the old engines. At least Carsdirect is already listing preliminary info on the LS460 and that is the one I am waiting for. With improved LS goodness and 380 hp that might be exactly what I am looking for.

I just read on another board, Infiniti has a 69 day supply of cars, highest of any luxury brand, so they are really trying to discount and move them.

lets talk about facts, not beliefs:
- The Lexus brand has a 20-day supply, and Scion has a 13-day supply. Most automakers strive for a supply of about 60 days (this is from Jan 2006).
- GS430 is special order car now for most regions.

Both of these indicate that Lexus has indeed cut the production.

Default Porsche Cars North America Reports February 2006 Sales

ATLANTA, March 1 -- Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), importer and distributor of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne SUVs in the United States and Canada, today announced its best-ever February sales in the United States. The company sold a total of 2,700 Porsches, an increase of 20 percent compared to February of 2005.

This record-setting performance was due to sharp increases in sports car line sales. The Boxster/Cayman series sales of 870 units was 60 percent ahead of the same period last year, while the 911 series total of 902 units was 31 percent greater than the February 2005 total. Sales of the Cayenne totaled 917 units.

"To have such a strong sales performance in our sports car model lines is very impressive," said Peter Schwarzenbauer, PCNA President and CEO. "It is also remarkable given the difficult economical environment as well as the harsh weather that hit our major Northeast markets last month."

In addition, dealers sold 482 Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned vehicles, compared to 352 for the same period last year.
