BMW 8 series appreciation thread
Ignoring the fact these cars give more problems than my last girlfriend, inside and out, near perfection. The floating headrests that can be seen when you drop all 4 windows, how cool is that? Just incredible. They have V-8 then V-12 power, though never officially a M car.
We have been lucky to have them attend our SELOC show in the SUmmer and I saw one today and was just thinking how incredible this car was to look at.

To me, the 8 series was one of the best looking BMW 's ever made, used ones are pretty reasonable, but I heard the maintenance, and electrical problems are a nightmare!

I wanted to get a used 8 series so bad as well as a used Jaguar XK-8 while I was looking for the GS and found a few in my price range but everyone said they have expensive electrical problems and are a fortune to maintain and if something major breaks like a engine or transmission the repair bill can cost almost as much as the what they are going for. The car looks great and the interior is very nice too. It looks expensive inside and out but it is not flashy or overdone. The 8 series was very heavy and did not perform all that well even though most had a v-12, it was not as smooth as a SL so many people figured since it did not have the perfomance characteristics of most BMWs and rode kind of rough why not just get a SL. The car was also extremely expensive which turned alot of people off. If I knew someone that was a BMW expert and could hook me up if anything goes wrong then I would love to own this car. Robert Deniro drove a 8 series in a scene in "Heat" at the end as well as in "The Score", he said in an interview it was one of his favorite cars.

Funny you made this thread Mike. I was reading a recent issue of Automobile at home the other night and came across an 850 for sale in the classifieds. 94 Model year, roughly 50k miles, asking $55 thousand. I had commented to my wife that it was hands down my favorite Bimmer ever made.
Amazing that a 94 has held that much value.

Love that car...I helped my father acquire one. It's a black on black '97 840ci...one of the most reliable years for this car. My dad says that when he takes it to the $tealer for service they all come out to stare at it...it is still that rare today. I am looking for some wheels for it...18" only...anyone have any ideas for good looking wheels?

I always liked the 8, but I wouldstay away from the V12 (850 version). Looked at one before I bought my GS, a beautiful metallic cherry red (it had been repainted, but it was nicely done). The guys was asking $15K for it, but it was due for the major 60K service. The V12 is like maintaining TWO staight-6 BMW engines... no thanks.
The 840 is the car to get. I say the one in Automobile for $55K- nice car, but that dude is the President of the Optimists' Club! You could buy two nice used 840s for that...
Here's a local one (done for a Director at Mattel Hot Wheels in El Segundo)
19x9 245/35-19
19x10.5 285/30-19
H&R springs, Bistein shocks
Blacked-out interior wood.
Looks pretty wicked!

I had no idea what the market was for these cars. I thought the $55k was normal. $15-$25k sounds MUCH more reasonable!
That black example is ULTRA clean!!! Very nice.
KVA.....there's your wheel!!!!

Yeah...that looks sweet. My dad bought the 840 for about $29K a few years ago and it was in excellent condition and a single owner car. I bet one could be had for $25K no problem.
