Limits
So the Forbes thread mentioned reliability limits, saying that we may have reached a plateau in improving initial quality reliability.
On the same theme, what kind of limit do you think we'll reach with both hp and 0-60 speeds in consumer luxury cars? 10 years ago, it seemed 150 hp was pretty good and 0-60 in 8 or 9 seconds was normal. Now we have well over 200-300 as average for V6 and V8 engines and 0-60 in 5-6 seconds.
With NA 6 and 8 cylinder engines, DI, and VVT, I'm thinking we'll top out around 350 hp for V6 and 450 hp for V8 engines and 0-60 times of about 5 seconds for regular consumer luxury cars (i.e., not SLR, M5 sorts of cars, but regular IS350/LS460/S550/530i type cars).

there are no limits to anything. They are still huge inroads to be made with regards to quality and reliability as well. And if IS350 with 306hp does 0-60 in 5.1, with 50 hp it would do well below that...

On this pace, if gas stays flat in price here, I think your assumptions are about correct. 300hp will be nothing special anymore, 250hp is now common. Will 400hp be common??
Also, with the increase in gears, surely a 10 speed will come since Lexus has 8 and I know the GErmans won't take that. Or more CVT.
Though since we are talking luxury cars, I guess gas prices mean less. So I think your assumptions are on mark.
Also, car luxury makers are dropping I-4s in America. Now Benz doesn't offer them, BMW dropped their I-4s with the E36-E46 conversion. So now the entry level car has a V-6 with more power.
