With an automatic?

 

I only shift to N when I am coasting down a big hill, or at stoplights when I feel like revving the entire time I'm stopped because I like to hear my exhaust

 

Coasting downhill in neutral???

 

I heard that constantly shifting between drive and neutral will kill the gearbox?

 

I wouldn't downshift an automatic, just from experience I had to replace a Honda Accord Tranny that I did that to every day for 2 years.

 

Yes, there is a large gradual downward sloping hill by my house where if I leave it in N the car doesn't pick up much speed by the time it gets to the bottom, If I let it coast all the way I usually end up going about 42-43 mph by the time I'm at the bottom.

 

IMO this is just a TAD over-****.

 

While in Japan, I saw several of the drivers who took us around put the car in "N" at stop lights. (They were driving automatic trannies) Couldn't figure out why they would do this. A couple of the cars we looked at at used lots had really loose auto shift levers. Must be a common practise there.

I've been doing this for years. Haven't really noticed any significant change to my MPGs but oh well, at least you won't ever have to worry about accidentally hitting the gas pedal while waiting for the red light.

truth is......I come from a long line of "row yer own" cars.
..........maybe we feel like we need to be doing something.?

Its not so much the neutral thing for me....as the D to 3rd (and back in the gated shifter).
