I did some more research on RX 400h sales. Incredible.

The RX 400h sold 2,470 units. The newly revised INfiniti FX 35 and 45 didn't beat that.

The Brand new from the ground up Mercedes ML sold 2,740 units last month, that is 350 AND 500 numbers. So with 2 models, they BARELY outsold the RX HYBRID
.
BMWs X5 with 3.0, 4.4 and 4.8 models, sold 2,462 units.

THe RX 400 is FINE, selling better than ever. Considering the COST of this SUV, this says a lot.

no, BMW is giving out $3.5k on average per car sold in the USA just to give back to the community. Of course, why didnt I think of that before? :-).

Hey, I'm not saying 2.9% doesn't help sales. But if you think that's the sole reason why BMW is doing so well then I've got a bridge to sell you

Not a single import model.

& they sold 9,000+ Toyota Crowns in one month, (vs. 35,000 to 50,000 MB's/BMW's in one year there). That's also a lot of Toyota Crown sales competing with the Lexus GS/IS models . . .

On a quick note Cadillac sold 30 BLS in it's inaugural month. Good job!

XLR did worse than SC selling only 4 pieces.

Most definetly... Nobody said BMW's are bad cars, BMW has great lineup with great cars.

Nevertheless, huge raise in sales comes with largest incentives among real competition. That 3.5k is definetly not 2.9% financing only, it is huge discounts and rabates for dealers to move cars. Consider that complete Toyota has average of 1.2k, which is probably a lot larger than Lexus (for instance average for Tundra was well over 3k). You can certainly say that IS and GS will never match sales of 3 and 5 series simply because Lexus will never give out such incentives.

I disagree, on multiple fronts.
1. Yes, it is the 2.9% as well as some lease support in money factors (same thing). There are no rebates or dealer incentives at this time (there was a conquest dealer rebate in January on the 5-series).
2. Remember that BMWs are more expensive than comparable Lexuses. For instance a 530 goes for about what a GS430 goes for.
3. There is CONSIDERABLY more profit in a Lexus than a BMW. Take a gander at KKB and you will see that not only is the dealer margin much higher on the base price (about 15% for the Lexus vs. 9% for the BMW), but each option on the Lexus gives the dealer about a 25% profit vs 5% on the BMW. So even though they may sticker close, you have much less negotiating room in a BMW vs. a Lexus - making the BMW even more expensive.
4. Lexus gives out plenty of incentives - don't kid yourself that they would never do a 2.9%. The deal they made me on my GS430 back in 2002 was simply amazing at the time ($250 per month difference in lease prices, even with the BMW having a higher residual and almost the same sticker price).
5. In spite of all of this, BMW outsells Lexus in cars. - but it is not because of incentives. They have many more choices (525, 525xi, 530, 530xi, 550, etc) in each model segment

Lexus average incentive per car sold for March 2006 was $193 vs 3.5k for BMW

What is there to disagree? BMW has huge incentives.
Keep in mind when they talk about incentives, they mean manufacturer to dealer, not dealer to customer. It is price that manufacturer gets for the car, not the dealer. $3.5k is huge. It is almost astonishing. It is GM level of incentives. In fact, it is bigger than what GM gave away in March 2006.

Yes, Lexus dealers make most money out there, but that only proves my point more. When BMW has to sell more cars, they give out more freebies. When Lexus has unsold cars, they lower the production.

We are not even talking about what brand we like more or what car. It is economics and statistics. If BMW didnt have to give $3.5k to move their cars, they wouldnt.

Statistically, it means that BMW would have saved $80million in March alone if it had incentives as low as Lexus. Thats almost 1 billion per year.

Granted, Lexus has new model mix but so does BMW. What Lexus has done is lower the production of certain models so they wouldnt have to incentivise them. Please dont take this as criticism of BMW cars, it is certainly not.

What's KKB and where on there would you find dealer profit per car?

You are killing me. Go to a loan calculator site. Figure a $50,000 car at 2.9% interest and then one at 5.9% interest. The difference over 48 months is $3,237. Wow, strange how this is almost the amount of their incentives!!!!

But wait around, they will not be offering 2.9% for much longer (they might have dumped it already). Then their incentives will go lower again and you can shoot for another reason as to why they outsell Lexus in cars. even though they are more expensive....

Incendiary, yes, kbb.com - sorry abou that.
