Early look at sales How retail sales in the first 12 days of March compare to the same period a year ago: GM -20% Ford -19% DCX -14% Toyota/Lexus -9% Honda/Acura Even BMW/Mini +8% Hyundai -17% VW -2% Nissan/Infiniti -12% Total Industry -13%
U.S. consumers bought 13 percent fewer new cars and trucks during the first 12 days of March, a disappointing sign for automakers as they enter the important spring selling season, according to a survey released Monday.
J.D. Power and Associates' Power Information Network said every major automaker, aside from BMW AG, posted a decline in retail sales during the period. The survey tracks sales at more than 10,000 dealers nationwide and doesn't include sales to fleet customers.
Detroit's automakers fared worse than their top competitors. The Chrysler Group's sales fell 14 percent, and General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. fell 20 percent and 19 percent, respectively, according to the Power Information Network.
GM's retail market share fell to 21.3 percent from 23 percent before its new "March Madness" incentive program began.
Ford's market share dipped to 16.3 percent from about 17.6 percent, and Chrysler slid to 12.7 percent from 12.8 percent.
Luxury carmaker BMW was the only manufacturer to see a gain, with retail sales up 8 percent.
Toyota Motor Corp. fell into an unusual position. Its sales dropped by 9 percent but its market share jumped to 16.8 percent from 16 percent. Honda Motor Co.'s sales were flat. Hyundai Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. saw double-digit declines.
"It does not mean that the total month will end that way," said Tom Libby, senior director of industry analysis at Power. "By the end of the month, the manufacturers generally add in their fleet sales. The domestic automakers have a disproportionately higher fleet mix, so that will bring up their share."
Paul Taylor, economist for the National Automobile Dealers Association, said fickle weather, particularly in the Midwest and on the Eastern seaboard, has kept people out of showrooms.
"The weather hasn't been conducive for most of the month," Taylor said.
"As a consequence, you'll see a stronger outpouring of customers when spring (temperatures) arrives."
Auto sales are up 3.8 percent this year, but analysts expect full-year demand to be flat or slightly weaker than 2005, which was the third-best year ever.
Although customers have trickled into Detroit-based Jefferson Chevrolet to check out GM's "March Madness" incentive program, the shift from mild to cold weather has dampened sales.
Showroom traffic this month has been "very sporadic," said Brian Tellier, general manager at the dealership.
He's counting on spring's warmer breeze for a boost. "Consumers will be a little more apt to kick some tires," he said.

There could be many factors; weather, gas prices, people just too busy, people waiting for the new models to come out and the economy in general. We'll have to see what happens when this month is over. We still have ten more days a lot more cars could be sold from now till the 31st. "Month ain't over yet." Good luck to all the auto makers. May the best auto maker prevail.

lol, they start compiling first two weeks reports now? I guess you gotta pay for something :-).
With Toyota/Lexus, new ES and Camry probably lost some market during first few weeks of the month, but Camry should regain a lot during the end... Same goes for new FJ, Yaris, etc, etc...

Part of it, at least from what I've seems to be styling-related. Automakers each year seem to be trying to outdo one another with sweepback headlights, humpback-whale-shaped roofs, slit-grille openings, silver-plastic all over the interiors, bigger and bigger wheels, and lower and lower-profile tires. While no doubt there are car buyers who want these features, there are also many more conservative buyers and traditionalists who don't. I hear this all the time ( not necessarily on CL ) from people who I am talking cars with and advising....." gee, I just don't like these new shapes ".....and they end up keeping their old car instead and trying to wring some more miles out of it.

Probably not too big a deal but the real estate market started to slow down big time the end of last year. Now it has backed up into mortgages and other support industries. Might have had some deductible interest going from house refinancing into car purchases that is coming to an end. Maybe those bonuses and fat commissions to everyone in the real estate food chain dried up. Or maybe people don't feel as good about the economy as they did and are just pulling back. But watching these numbers too close can be as useless as buying cars by comparing sales brochures.
As for bimmer, I do not know about mini but the five is selling very well. The price difference between a five and a seven is under 10K around here because the five is going at sticker while the seven is seeing a pretty healthy discount. Not going to give a lot of room for the new LS pricing. If the larger hybrids are not selling as well as the petro models, Toyota/Lexus may have a bet going bad. Still, just too early to tell. But interesting data and it is worth watching to see how the month ends.

DaimlerChrysler March 2006 Sales Report
- Chrysler Group Reports Sales of 216,412 Vehicles, a 2 Percent Increase for March 2006
- Mercedes-Benz USA Reports Sales of 21,417 Vehicles, an 18 Percent Increase for March 2006
NEW YORK, April 3 -- DaimlerChrysler AG , the third largest U.S. auto maker, today reported total group sales of 237,829 passenger vehicles in the U.S. for March 2006, a 12 percent increase compared to March 2005. All sales figures in this release are on an unadjusted basis unless otherwise noted.
Chrysler Group, which consists of the Chrysler, Jeep(R) and Dodge brands, posted sales of 216,412 vehicles in the U.S., an increase of 2 percent. Following global sales growth of 4.7 percent to 2.83 million units in 2005, Chrysler Group will launch 10 all-new vehicles in 2006, the most aggressive product launch in company history, while introducing some of the most fuel- efficient vehicles to date. Chrysler Group will take its best-selling Dodge brand to international markets in 2006, beginning with the all-new 2007 Dodge Caliber which continues arriving at U.S. dealerships this month to positive customer response.
Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) posted sales of 21,417 units, up 18 percent compared to the same month last year and posing its best March on record. Boosting sales for the month were the R-Class sports tourer ML-Class SUV. Mercedes will be rounding out its family of light trucks with the introduction of the brand new GL-Class, the first European full-sized luxury SUV in May. On the heels of recording twelve consecutive years of sales growth in 2005, February sales were boosted in part by this month's introduction of the 2007 S-Class, the ninth-generation of Mercedes-Benz's flagship vehicle.
Detailed vehicle sales information for MBUSA and Chrysler Group will be announced later today in separate press releases issued by the groups. March 2005 and March 2006 both had 27 selling days.

Ford March 2006 Sales Results
* Ford Motor Company's March U.S. sales totaled 291,146. * Highest sales yet for new mid-size sedans - Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr. Combined sales in March were 17,157, up 28 percent from February. * Ford's F-Series posts third consecutive sales increase. March sales were 84,168, up 5 percent from year ago. * All-new Explorer Sport Trac debuts with higher-than-expected sales. * Lincoln, bolstered by new Zephyr and Mark LT, achieves higher sales in March and first quarter. * Land Rover dealers report record sales for the sixth consecutive month.
DEARBORN, Mich., April 3 -- U.S. customers purchased or leased 291,146 cars and trucks from Ford , Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Volvo dealers in March, down 5 percent from a year ago. In the first quarter, the company's sales totaled 740,838, down 3 percent.
Sales for the company's new mid-size sedans -- Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln Zephyr -- continued to grow as each of the cars posted their highest monthly sales to date. Combined sales totaled 17,157 in March, up 28 percent from February.
"The Fusion, Milan and Zephyr are helping us to carve out a larger share of the market among mid-size car buyers," said Al Giombetti, vice president Ford and Lincoln Mercury marketing and sales. "These cars are helping our dealers to retain our owners and capture new ones in one of the largest segments in the industry."
Ford's F-Series truck also has gained market share in another important segment, the full-size pickup market. In March, F-Series sales totaled 84,168, up 5 percent compared with a year ago and the highest March sales since 2000. It was the third month in a row of higher sales for America's best-selling vehicle. Through March, F-Series sales totaled 199,801, up 6 percent. Another full-size pickup, Lincoln's Mark LT posted its second highest sales month (1,543) in March. Through February, the company gained three full points of share in the full-size pickup segment.
In March, the all-new Ford Explorer Sport Trac arrived in dealer showrooms and sales totaled almost 1,500. When the original Sport Trac was introduced in early 2000, it was the industry's first sport utility truck (SUT). The new Sport Trac offers consumers truck capability, including a 4.6-liter V-8 engine, with the comfort and convenience of a 4-door Explorer.
Overall, sales for the 4-door Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer were lower than a year ago reflecting lower fleet deliveries. Retail sales for these new models were equal to a year ago.
Lincoln, bolstered by the all-new Zephyr sedan and Lincoln Mark LT full- size pickup, posted a sales increase in March and higher sales for the first quarter.
Land Rover dealers reported record sales for March and the first quarter. Sales totaled 4,153 for the month (up 39 percent) and 11,299 for the quarter
(up 34 percent). March was the sixth consecutive month of record sales for Land Rover.
