GM, Fuji/Subaru to dissolve relationship; Toyota takes control
General Motors has agreed to sell an 8.7 percent stake in Fuji Heavy — the maker of Subaru-brand cars — to rival Toyota. Toyota will pay about $315 million in cash for 68 million shares, making it the top shareholder in the company. The sale may be a sign of serious problems at the automaker. “It’s surprising how fast GM is selling off the family silver, said Graeme Maxton, a director of the Economist Intelligence Unit in Hong Kong. “It rings alarm bells.” Fuji Heavy generates about 90 percent of sales from its automobile business. “We’ve had a good partnership,” said Troy Clarke, president of GM Asia Pacific in a statement. “There were not enough collaborative projects to sustain the alliance.”

Toyota may use Fuji to build 100,000 cars a year in U.S.
Toyota and Fuji Heavy, the parent company of Subaru, are currently negotiating to have Fuji produce about 100,000 Toyota vehicles annually in the United States in 2007 or later, negotiation sources said Friday, according to Kyodo News. The two companies, which formed a partnership in October, are expected to reach an agreement on the first portion of the order by the end of the year, the sources said. The two companies also recently agreed to cooperate on a gas-electric hybrid version of the Subaru Legacy passenger car. Toyota also plans to outsource the full redesign of a “sporty subcompact” to Subaru.

ClubFoot, I'm moving this post to car chat. I *think* it has been covered there but I'm sure one of the CC residents will confirm.

What I would really like to see here, if possible, is the world's best inexpensive AWD systems ( Subaru ) combined with the world's most durable engines ( Toyota ) That may not be possible, though, because the Subaru AWD systems are designed for compact, low-mounted H4 and H6 engines.

A twin turbo flat six sports car would be very nice. Awd turbo model would be cool. If they make another Supra a twin turbo flat six would be a very nice powerplant.
