Exclamation Toyota recalls 57,000 Lexus to replace front seat belts -no accidents reported though

TOKYO April 12, 2006; Reuters reported that Toyota Motor Corp. said on Wednesday it is recalling 11,000 Lexus cars in Japan and 46,000 overseas to fix a faulty seat belt part.

Toyota will replace seat belts in both front seats, which can become jammed inside the holding due to a faulty part, it said.

No accidents have been reported due to the defect, it said.

Toyota, close to overtaking General Motors Corp. as the world's No.1 seller of automobiles, has sold 9,600 Lexus in Japan since it ushered in the 16-year-old Lexus brand to its home market in August 2005 in what it said is a major step toward taking on top luxury marques everywhere else.

It did not disclose estimated recall costs

Those numbers are off or maybe it's just me. If they've only sold 9600 Lexus cars in Japan since they started in Aug., how can they recall 11,000 of them?

Maybe they only sold that many but they also recalled the ones on lots? Or is that included in that 9600? How come there isnt more response to this? Where's all the hardcore Lexus people to come to their defense?

Just cuz its a lexus doesnt mean recall immune, it couldve been far worse, MB and GM/Ford recalled literally millions of vehicles in the past few years

Just like with that IS250 recall with the free nano, maybe they will get some free stuff

There's not much to defend about really, the most obvious defence is that it looks like a timely pre-emptive recall to prevent accidents from occurring before they actually did

Funny my passenger side seatbelt jammed yesterday and it took my wife and I about 10mins to get working again. It just would come halfway out and stop, couldn't pull it out anymore and it wouldn't retract back in.

Yeah, I wonder why they didn't say the model year. I found another article that hints it is the 2006 model.. the portion in bold.

Toyota to recall 57,000 Lexus cars globally

Associated Press
Published April 12, 2006, 11:38 AM CDT

TOKYO (Dow Jones/AP) _ Toyota Motor Corp. said -- TOKYO (Dow Jones/AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday that it will recall about 57,000 vehicles from its upscale Lexus brand globally, due to faulty parts in the device that winds seat belts.

The recall affects the Lexus GS and IS models sold in North America, Japan, Europe and other markets. Passengers may not be able to buckle up due to the faulty parts. Those vehicles were produced between July and December last year.

Of the 57,000 vehicles, about 29,000 vehicles will be recalled in North America, 11,000 in Japan, 10,000 in Europe, and the remainder in other markets.

Thanks Sushihead,

I claim to have had the first seatbelt replacement done for the new IS.

For my car, I believe they only fixed the driver's side (the one that jammed).

When mine jammed, there were no parts around so I had the ES loaner for a week and a half.

I am glad that Toyota is stepping up to bat here.

Sounds like you're affected, you should call your dealer to be one of the first in line to get it fixed, since the article just came out today.
